IPL 2026: Sanjay Manjrekar Says CSK ‘Messed Up' MS Dhoni Situation Amid Farewell Speculation

Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has delivered a brutally honest assessment of MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings amid growing speculation over whether IPL 2026 could mark the legendary captain's final appearance in the tournament.

Speaking on The Insight Edge Podcast with Sachi Pai for Sportstar, Manjrekar admitted that he has "lost interest" in the ongoing Dhoni retirement debate and claimed CSK handled the entire situation poorly, ultimately affecting the team's balance and performance.

IPL 2026 Sanjay Manjrekar Says CSK Messed Up MS Dhoni Situation Amid Farewell Speculation

'I Don't Care Whether He Plays Or Not': Manjrekar

When asked if fans could see Dhoni one final time in the IPL, Manjrekar did not hold back. "To be very honest, I've exhausted myself so much talking about another icon. I've got nothing left to say about MS Dhoni. And if you want a very short and brutally honest answer, it doesn't matter. I don't care whether he plays or doesn't play," Manjrekar said.

The former batter clarified that his admiration for Dhoni the player and India captain remains intact, but he believes the current version of Dhoni is far removed from his peak years.

"What he's done for India is something that I'll take to bed every time. My favourite captain, one of the all-time great captains. Just love Dhoni for what he did," he added.

'CSK Handled The Dhoni Phenomenon Very Poorly'

Manjrekar's sharpest criticism was reserved for CSK's management of the Dhoni situation over recent IPL seasons.

According to him, the franchise became too emotionally attached to the Dhoni phenomenon instead of focusing purely on team balance and winning combinations.

"The current version obviously is a shadow of himself and CSK just handled that Dhoni phenomenon very poorly and as a result just messed up the whole team," he said.

The remarks come at a time when CSK have struggled for consistency in IPL 2026, with questions repeatedly raised about team composition, batting flexibility, and succession planning.

Manjrekar Believes Prime Dhoni Could Still Have Taken CSK To Playoffs

Despite criticising the current setup, Manjrekar maintained that Dhoni in his prime would still have transformed the fortunes of the present CSK squad.

"Even this team that we see, CSK's team, if Dhoni in his prime was leading this team, this team would have been in the playoffs," he stated.

That statement underlined the enormous respect Manjrekar still holds for Dhoni's leadership ability, tactical intelligence, and game awareness during his peak years with both India and CSK.

'Don't Get Too Emotional About Players'

Manjrekar also suggested CSK had learned a harsh lesson about emotional decision-making in franchise cricket.

According to him, teams should focus more on performances, points-table realities, and tactical clarity instead of sentiment-driven calls.

"CSK have learned one harsh lesson. Don't get too emotional about your players. Be emotional about the reality, the performances, your current standing on the points table," he explained.

He further questioned Dhoni's current role in the playing XI, arguing that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter's limited batting involvement has increasingly become more symbolic than tactical.

"He's not going to come in and open the innings or bat at number three. He'll come maybe in the last over and all. That is more to do with the Dhoni phenomenon rather than finding the best way to win a game," Manjrekar added.

Dhoni's Future Still Unclear

As IPL 2026 enters its decisive phase, uncertainty continues around whether fans have already witnessed Dhoni's final appearance or if CSK will attempt to give their iconic skipper a farewell match.

Fans turned out in large numbers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday (May 18) for CSK's final home game as they face Sunrisers Hyderabad in a must-win game, Dhoni arrived in the arena but didn't feature in the playing eleven. It is the first instance when the former CSK skipper arrived at the stadium on a match day. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad at the toss said, "MS (Dhoni) is still here but he is not fit enough to play this game."

With just one more league game to go and CSK's playoffs spot on the line, Dhoni's appearance in the next game also looks highly unlikely.

While Dhoni's legacy as one of India's greatest captains remains untouchable, Manjrekar's comments have once again reignited the debate around balancing legacy, emotions, and performance in franchise cricket.

For CSK, the bigger question may no longer be about Dhoni's farewell - but whether the franchise delayed its transition plans for too long.
