IPL 2026 set to be Pushed Back? New Date Revealed as doubts loom over Final

By MyKhel Staff

As IPL fever builds, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) grapples with a delicate puzzle for the start date of IPL 2026 season.

Although it was primarily slated to begin from March 26, a new report from Cricbuzz indicates the date may well be deferred.

IPL 2026 set to be Pushed Back New Date Revealed as doubts loom over Final

IPL 2026 to start a bit Later?

As per the report, BCCI is mulling over syncing the IPL 2026 season's blockbuster opener with state elections looming large. The much-anticipated kickoff, first pegged for March 26, now eyes March 28 or 29, with an official nod possibly arriving next week.

Teams got the heads-up on a March 26-to-May 31 slot during last December's high-stakes auction in Abu Dhabi. Yet, polls in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and West Bengal threaten clashes in key venues, stalling the full calendar. Due to the election schedule, the IPL 2026 schedule is yet to be released, and amid this, the BCCI may defer the start for a couple of days.

When will the IPL 2026 Final be?

The IPL 2026 was supposed to continue till May 31, but a late start of two or three days may prompt BCCI to change their end date as well. Given May 31 a Sunday, BCCI's next weekend window to conduct the IPL will be June 7.

Time's ticking, and team bosses are pushing hard. Rather than wait for the Election Commission's poll dates, BCCI might unveil a starter schedule in early March, patching in the rest later.

This isn't uncharted territory for IPL, which has dodged disruptions from COVID to global events. A short deferral to the IPL 2026 season may not be worst thing for the players, as many of them would be playing in the IPL after T20 World Cup, which is slated to continue till March 8.

Last season, the IPL was halted due to the India-Pakistan border tensions and it concluded in the first week of June. The final was played on a weekday between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings and RCB won their maiden title.
