IPL 2026: Both Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings will once again chase their maiden IPL title as the 2026 season approaches, hoping to finally break an 18-year jinx. Speaking on IPL Today Live on JioStar, former cricketers Aakash Chopra and Irfan Pathan shared insights into the long-standing struggles of both franchises and assessed their chances this season.
Aakash Chopra pointed out that inconsistency in team selection and leadership has been a major reason behind the underachievement of both sides. He emphasized that successful franchises build around continuity, something DC and PBKS have lacked over the years.
According to Chopra, frequent changes in captains and playing XIs have disrupted team balance.

He noted that one franchise has gone through as many as 15 captains, while the other has had 17, underlining the absence of long-term planning. He stressed that teams that quickly settle on their best combinations tend to perform better, while those constantly experimenting often struggle near the bottom of the table.
Chopra praised Delhi's recent approach at the auctions, highlighting a clear improvement in squad-building. Since 2019, the franchise has remained competitive, even reaching the IPL final in 2020.
He added that the current squad looks well-rounded, with quality backups across most positions. However, he did note a potential gap in the spin department, pointing out that replacing key players like Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav would be difficult for any team.
On paper, Chopra believes Delhi Capitals hold a slight edge over Punjab Kings heading into IPL 2026.
Talent Identification Issues in Delhi's Earlier Years
Irfan Pathan reflected on his time with Delhi, highlighting how poor talent management affected the team in the early 2010s. He recalled that despite having players like AB de Villiers and Andre Russell in the squad, the franchise failed to fully utilize their potential.
Pathan noted that Russell, in particular, struggled to find a consistent place in the playing XI despite internal discussions about giving him more opportunities. He stressed that identifying and nurturing talent is crucial, an area where Delhi had previously fallen short.
On the other hand, Pathan credited Punjab Kings' recent progress to improved leadership and decision-making. He highlighted the importance of clarity in planning, especially during auctions, where Punjab made bold calls.
The franchise's decision to move on from underperforming players like Glenn Maxwell and invest in a balanced squad has paid dividends. Pathan also pointed to the presence of impactful all-rounders such as Azmatullah Omarzai, Marco Jansen, and Marcus Stoinis as a major boost.
Additionally, the franchise showed strong intent by targeting Shreyas Iyer as captain, signaling a clear leadership direction.
With both teams showing signs of improvement in squad composition and leadership, IPL 2026 could finally mark a breakthrough season. While Delhi Capitals appear more settled on paper, the Punjab Kings' renewed clarity and depth make them equally dangerous contenders.
As the new season unfolds, the question remains: Can either franchise finally rewrite history and lift its maiden IPL trophy?
