The Indian Premier League is set to return with another exciting season as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that IPL 2026 will begin on March 28. The announcement has ended weeks of speculation over the tournament's schedule, with franchises now preparing for the upcoming campaign.
The upcoming edition will be the 19th season of the IPL, featuring 10 teams and a total of 84 matches across multiple venues in India. The tournament is expected to run for more than two months before concluding with the final on May 31, 2026.

While the IPL window had long been expected to fall in the late March to May period, the official confirmation came only recently amid uncertainty over venue readiness and logistical planning.
Reports had suggested that the schedule announcement was delayed due to factors such as venue preparations and administrative considerations, which meant the BCCI waited before finalising the dates.
The board eventually confirmed the start date, clearing doubts about when the tournament would begin after the conclusion of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
The opening match of the season is expected to be hosted in Bengaluru, with the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium likely to stage the first game of the tournament. As per IPL tradition, the defending champions are expected to feature in the season opener.
Bengaluru will also host several key matches during the tournament, while other IPL venues across India will stage games during the league phase.
With the dates now confirmed, IPL franchises will begin the final phase of preparations for the new season. Training camps, promotional activities, and squad planning are expected to intensify as teams gear up for another demanding campaign.
The IPL continues to be the most popular franchise cricket league in the world, attracting top international stars alongside India's emerging talent.
The upcoming season promises intense rivalries, packed stadiums and high-scoring contests as teams battle for the coveted trophy.
With the tournament scheduled to start just weeks after the global T20 tournament, the IPL will once again ensure that cricket fans enjoy an uninterrupted stretch of elite T20 action.
