IPL 2026: Venkatesh Iyer Waits Patiently for RCB Playing XI Opportunity, Backs Team Balance and Role Clarity

Venkatesh Iyer has admitted that sitting out games has tested his patience, but the Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder remains committed to the team's plans and is confident that his opportunity will come in IPL 2026.

Having featured in just one match since joining RCB, the tall left-handed batter from Madhya Pradesh acknowledged that the team's settled combination has limited his chances so far. He pointed out that the defending champions have little reason to tinker with a winning formula, especially with a top and middle order that has delivered consistently.

Venkatesh Iyer on RCB Selection Role Clarity Team Balance and Playing XI Chances

"...not used to sitting out. See, this is a team environment and as someone who places the team above everything else, it's my duty to adhere to the environment," Venkatesh said. He stressed that maintaining a championship-winning combination is often the right approach, adding that his role is to stay ready and contribute when called upon.

Despite the limited game time, the 31-year-old emphasised that communication within the RCB setup has been clear and encouraging. He credited director of cricket Mo Bobat, head coach Andy Flower and mentor Dinesh Karthik for providing clarity around his role in the squad. "They've been amazing when it comes to conversations about what my role in the team is. They've given me absolute clarity... it's definitely a matter of when rather than if," he said.

Motivation Remains Intact Despite Reduced Role

Venkatesh also addressed the challenge of staying motivated despite fewer opportunities. Having previously been a key player in Kolkata Knight Riders' title-winning campaign and once commanding a significantly higher auction price, the all-rounder insisted that external factors do not define his mindset.

"It's not easy. But it's extremely important to stay motivated because you can easily get desperate," he said. He added that his focus remains on self-improvement and maintaining work ethic, regardless of selection. The impact player rule, he noted, also keeps possibilities open in a dynamic T20 environment.

Emotional Connect with KKR Still Strong

Reflecting on his move from Kolkata Knight Riders, Venkatesh admitted that the emotional connection with his former franchise remains intact. However, he revealed that the transition was handled with clarity and honesty, particularly in discussions with KKR coach Abhishek Nair.

"I spent quite a lot of time at KKR... I'd be lying if I said that I don't have any emotional connection to them," he said, while also acknowledging that the decision to part ways was based on the team's requirements.

Learning and Growth at RCB

At RCB, Venkatesh has been using his time off the field to refine his game, especially his batting approach. He highlighted the influence of Dinesh Karthik in helping him understand modern T20 batting dynamics, particularly in terms of adaptability and reading match situations.

He also spoke highly of captain Rajat Patidar, describing him as a player who combines simplicity with toughness. Having known Patidar since their age-group cricket days, Venkatesh praised his consistency in approach and temperament.

Focus on Skill Development

Away from match action, Venkatesh has been focusing on expanding his skill set, particularly his red-ball bowling. He revealed that IPL training sessions have provided him the opportunity to work with experienced international bowlers like Mitchell Starc previously and Josh Hazlewood this season.

"One thing that I really feel that I haven't tapped into is my red ball bowling," he said, adding that he actively seeks advice to improve this aspect of his game.

Waiting for the Right Moment

While the wait for regular opportunities continues, Venkatesh remains optimistic and grounded. He understands that team balance has kept him out of the playing XI but is confident that situations will arise where he can contribute.

For now, the focus remains on preparation, patience and readiness - qualities that could soon see him play a bigger role in RCB's IPL 2026 campaign.
