IPL 2026: Why has Matheesha Pathirana Walked Back after 8 Balls into KKR Debut?

Kolkata Knight Riders have potentially suffered a huge blow as Matheesha Pathirana has aggravated an injury and has gone back to the dug out eight deliveries into his KKR debut.

In the IPL 2026 match against Gujarat Titans, Pathirana made his Knight Riders debut after his Rs 18 crore acquisition in the auction.

KKR vs GT: What Happened to Matheesha Pathirana?

Matheesha Pathirana was introduced as an Impact Player. He was brought to bowl the fourth over and did reasonably well, conceding just 7 runs in it. Into his second over, Pathirana bowled a decent first ball, but pulled up from release while bowling his second delivery.

After a pause, Pathirana completed the delivery, but was immediately in distress in his left knee region. The physio came out to address and the player was unable to continue. We are yet to recieve an official update on his injury, but the pacer has likely pulled a muscle in his left knee region.

Will Matheesha Pathirana Bowl Again?

There will be an inspection of Pathirana's condition as he gets the attention in the dressing room. For KKR, this is a big blow as they are in must-win territory in the latter half of the season. The Sri Lankan has been taken off and it looks like he won't be returning to bowl again in this match.
