IPL 2027: CSK Likely To Continue With Stephen Fleming Amid Pressure As Dhoni Era Transition Looms

Chennai Super Kings are expected to stay with Stephen Fleming as head coach for IPL 2027, even after another disappointing season extended the franchise’s slide from its title-winning peak. The decision, if formalised, would signal continuity at a time when a section of supporters has called for a reset after three straight seasons without a playoff appearance.

Fleming’s position has come under sharper scrutiny since CSK finished eighth in IPL 2026. The former New Zealand captain has been associated with the franchise since the inaugural IPL season in 2008 and took over as coach in 2009. His partnership with MS Dhoni has been central to CSK’s most successful years, built on stable planning, role clarity and trust in experienced players.

IPL 2027 CSK Likely To Continue With Stephen Fleming Amid Pressure As Dhoni Era Transition Looms

CSK set to back Stephen Fleming despite pressure

According to reports, Fleming’s contract is renewed annually, and the franchise is likely to continue that arrangement ahead of IPL 2027. CSK are understood to be unmoved by criticism on social media, where some fans have questioned selection calls, auction strategy and match-day tactics during the team’s decline.

The context makes the decision significant. CSK’s reputation was built on consistency. Under Fleming and Dhoni, the team became known for reaching the business end of the tournament with unusual regularity. That identity has taken a hit since the 2023 title, with the side failing to qualify for the playoffs in each of the next three seasons.

The lowest point came in IPL 2025, when CSK finished tenth for the first time. The 2026 campaign brought a small improvement in position but not enough to restore confidence. Injuries affected balance, while questions remained over batting tempo, finishing options and bowling reliability across different phases of the innings.

Dhoni factor remains central to CSK planning

MS Dhoni’s influence continues to be a major part of the CSK decision-making conversation. Fleming and Dhoni have worked together for more than a decade and a half, forming one of the IPL’s longest coach-captain partnerships. Even as Dhoni’s playing future remains uncertain, his understanding of the franchise’s culture still carries weight.

Dhoni was not a regular presence around the squad during parts of the 2026 season while managing injuries. He will be close to 46 during IPL 2027, leaving CSK with a wider leadership question to answer. Whether he plays, mentors, or stays away from the dugout, the franchise must plan for a transition that has already begun in practical terms.

CSK also moved away from their traditional experience-heavy model in 2026 by investing in younger players such as Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. Both offered promise, with Kartik making a stronger impression, but the team struggled to find a settled combination. That experiment may now shape the next auction cycle as much as Fleming’s future.

Retaining Fleming would not remove the need for change. It would instead place responsibility on the existing leadership group to modernise without losing the franchise’s core strengths. CSK’s next challenge is clear: rebuild a competitive squad, define succession beyond Dhoni, and turn recent promise into results before patience around a golden era begins to wear thin.
