IPL 2027: Top 4 Candidates Who Can Lead KKR For Upcoming Season

New Delhi, Oct 19: Ahead of the IPL 2027 season, three-time IPL Champion Kolkata Knight Riders are staring right down the barrel of yet another leadership shakeup following the retirement of Ajinkya Rahane. The veteran had been handed the captaincy soon after being signed at the auction, and now his exit means KKR must once again figure out who takes charge at a time when the side is hungry to get back among the title contenders.

But this shouldn't be new for Venky Mysore, Abhishek Nayar and co, who have been solving the captaincy jigsaw puzzle within the ranks of Knight Riders for close to a decade. Rarely has an IPL franchise leaned on the auction table so heavily to solve its captaincy question as Kolkata has over the years.

IPL 2027 Top 4 Candidates Who Can Lead KKR For Upcoming Season

The turnaround story for the Knight Riders started back in 2011, when they brought in Gautam Gambhir at the helm of affairs in 2011. That decision paid off, and KKR managed to win the championship back in 2012 and 2014. The left-hander handled the team well till 2018, after which he traded his allegiance to New Delhi.

Since Gambhir's departure, KKR have repeatedly turned to auction signings for leadership, appointing Dinesh Karthik in 2018, Eoin Morgan in 2020 and Shreyas Iyer in 2022. The latter led them to the title in 2024. After Iyer's exit, KKR brought back Ajinkya Rahane as captain for 2025.

So, who are the probable names who can take the mantle of leadership and probably end this hotchpotch at the top?

IPL 2027: Top 4 Names To Succeed KKR Leadership

Rinku Singh

The left-hand explosive batter is a front-runner to succeed to the mantle of Knight Riders in the lead-up to IPL 2027. Even KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar also showed confidence in Rinku, saying that the left-hander's evolution has transcended that of a 'cricketer' to that of a 'leader'. "We wanted a little more responsibility for Rinku to shoulder, and I feel it's the perfect time," Abhishek said.

Hardik Pandya

There has been a lot of chatter around Hardik Pandya joining KKR ahead of IPL 2027. After leading Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, the Indian all-rounder will be the ideal candidate to succeed and fill in the shoes of Ajinkya Rahane. Hardik's inclusion in the side will also bolster the pace bowling lineup of Knight Riders, which relies heavily on spinners. But there is going to be a huge battle at the auction table, which KKR needs to win first.

Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine is another potential candidate, having spent more than a decade with KKR and played a key role in all three of the franchise's title-winning campaigns. His deep understanding of the team's culture and functioning makes him a compelling option. However, considering the stage of his career, Narine may not be the ideal choice for a long-term leadership role.

Varun Chakravarthy

Another possibility, if u look at it, will be handing out the captaincy to Varun Chakravarthy. Having parachuted into the KKR bowling lineup almost accidentally, Varun has become one of the mainstays of KKR's bowling lineup, forming a deadly spin partnership with Sunil Narine over the years. But leading a bowling lineup and leading a franchise are two different ball games altogether. Will the KKR management bestow their trust on him for such a herculean task?
