IPL 2027 Is Coming. Here’s What The BCCI Has Decided So Far

The Indian Premier League is set to enter its 20th season in 2027, with the BCCI planning a grand celebration of the tournament's landmark edition.

Several details are beginning to take shape, although the complete schedule, auction date and venue are yet to be officially confirmed.

When will IPL 2027 begin?

The IPL 2027 season is tentatively expected to run from March 10 to May 15, according to current scheduling projections.

The proposed window would bring the tournament forward compared to recent editions, with the earlier start helping teams avoid the worst of India's summer heat and pre-monsoon weather later in the season.

The league is also currently expected to retain its 10-team format and 74-match structure, with no expansion announced so far.

IPL 2027 to mark 20 years of the league

The 2027 season will be a significant milestone for the IPL, which began in 2008.

At its 95th Annual General Meeting on September 18, the BCCI General Body approved plans to celebrate the 20th edition on a grand scale.

The AGM also saw Arun Singh Dhumal and M Khairul Jamal Majumdar inducted into the IPL Governing Council.

The 20th season will also coincide with another major BCCI milestone. The board's centenary celebrations are scheduled to begin in December 2027 and continue through 2028.

IPL 2027 auction to return to India

The IPL player auction is set to return to India after three consecutive editions were staged overseas.

The previous three auctions were held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi, with the 2025 mega auction taking place in Jeddah.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said the league wants to hold the 2027 auction in India, with the final city dependent on venue availability.

The auction is expected to be a smaller event than a mega auction, although the exact date and venue have not yet been announced.

What will happen to the Impact Player rule?

The Impact Player rule remains one of the major unresolved issues ahead of IPL 2027.

The rule is currently part of the regulations for the 2025-27 cycle, but the IPL Governing Council is reviewing whether it should continue.

Dhumal confirmed that the BCCI is seeking fresh feedback from franchises and other stakeholders before taking a final decision.

The rule has attracted criticism from several prominent players, including Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel, who have argued that its use can reduce the importance of genuine all-rounders.

For now, therefore, the Impact Player remains in place - but its future for IPL 2027 has not been settled.

With the landmark 20th season now formally on the BCCI's agenda, the next major pieces of the IPL 2027 puzzle will be the auction details, franchise preparations and the final decision on the Impact Player rule.
