IPL and PSL to Run Simultaneously in 2025 Due to Champions Trophy

By MyKhel Staff

In an unprecedented move, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL) are set to run concurrently in 2025 due to scheduling constraints imposed by the Champions Trophy hosted by Pakistan in February and March.

The news broke after the meeting between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and PSL franchise owners, which further revealed that the 2025 edition of the PSL is scheduled from April 7 to May 20.

PSL and IPL

These dates directly coincide with the IPL season, which traditionally occupies the April-May period. This year, the IPL commenced on March 22 and will conclude on May 26, indicating a similar timeframe for the following year.

This scheduling conflict marks the first time that the IPL and PSL will overlap, potentially impacting not only viewership but also the availability of international players who participate in both leagues. The PSL, now entering its tenth year, previously avoided scheduling overlaps and was held from February 17 to March 18 this year.

The PCB's decision to shift the PSL window was necessitated by the Champions Trophy, pushing the league into the spring months. The board is also considering expanding venue options beyond the traditional cities of Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi, with playoff matches potentially held at a neutral venue.

Salman Naseer, the PCB Chief Operating Officer, expressed the board's commitment to closely collaborate with franchise owners to refine the scheduling strategy, acknowledging the importance of making well-informed decisions for the future of one of Pakistan's most significant sporting brands.

The simultaneous scheduling of the IPL and PSL poses unique challenges, particularly concerning the recruitment and participation of foreign players who might have commitments across both leagues. It also raises questions about how fans will divide their attention and how broadcasters will manage the concurrent airing of matches.

As the PCB and BCCI navigate this complex scheduling landscape, the 2025 cricket season is poised to offer an unprecedented scenario where two of the world's premier T20 leagues will vie for global attention simultaneously.
