IPL Auction 2024 Rules: What Is Accelerated Process & How Do Incremental Bids Work?

The IPL Auction 2024 is all set to take place on Tuesday (December 19) at the Coco-Cola Arena in Dubai, UAE, where a maximum of 77 players, including 30 overseas stars, can by bought by the 10 franchises.

From a total of 1166 players, who registered their names for the bidding process, 333 players have been shortlisted by the franchises to go under the gavel during the auction process. Among the 333 players, 214 are Indian and 119 are from overseas teams.

IPL Auction 2024 Rules, Accelerated Process & Incremental Bids - All You Need To Know

Ahead of the auction, each team were given an addition Rs 5 Crore to their purse of Rs 95 Crore from last season, making it a Rs 100 Crore purse. However, each team's remaining budget is different after the retention and release of players.

While some teams have blown their funds via retention and trades like Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, some have swelled their purse although they have very little to do at the auction like Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings.

Kolkata Knight Riders will be the most busier side in the auction as they need to fill 12 slots (minimum of 5) to complete their squad for the upcoming season. Delhi Capitals also need to fill a maximum of 9 slots, while four teams need to fill 8 slots. Now let's take a look at some IPL Auction 2024 rules:

Are there any rules or restrictions in the auction? What is minimum number of players required to complete a squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League Season?

IPL Squad Size Limit

The squad size should not exceed over 25 players, including 17 Indian and 8 overseas players, and the minimum number required for a squad is anything from 18 to 25 with the same restriction of a maximum of 8 overseas and 17 Indian players.

There are 23 players who have been shortlisted in the highest bracket of Rs 2 Crore, while 13 players have been slotted in the second highest base price of Rs 1.50 Crore and 14 players have a reserve price of Rs 1 Crore. The remaining have been slotted, starting from Rs 20 Lakhs.

So, how do the bids increase for players being called out at the auction? What is the incremental bid for each base price? Find the incremental bid scenario below as BCCI's communication to the franchises in earlier auction:

Incremental Bids in IPL Auction 2024

  • For Bids from Rs 20/30/40/50 Lakhs up to Rs. 1 Crore, the incremental bids are Rs. 5 Lakh (Example: After Rs 20 Lakh, the next bid price will be Rs 30 Lakh)
  • For Bids from Rs. 1 Crore to Rs. 2 Crore, the incremental bids are Rs. 10 Lakh (Example: After Rs 1 Core, the next bid price will be Rs 1.10 Crore)
  • For Bids from Rs. 2 Crore to Rs. 5 Crore, the incremental bids are Rs. 20 Lakh (Example: After Rs 2 Crore, the next bid price will be Rs 2.20 Crore)
  • For Bids above Rs. 5 crore, the increments are 25 lakh (Example: After Rs 5 Crore, the next bid price will be Rs 5.25 Crore)

While that solves the question around how the incremental bids work, there is another aspect that needs explanation. And that is accelerated process in the IPL auction.

How does the accelerated process work in IPL Auction?

Accelerated process is done after the first set of capped and uncapped players are called out in set-wise order (70 players in the 2024 Auction). The remaining players will head into the accelerated process for which the franchises will select the required players to be called into the auction.

Does the auction end with the accelerated process?

No, the auction can continue with franchises selecting the unsold players from the earlier sets to be called back into the auction. This, however, will only happen if the teams haven't filled all their remaining slots.

How many sets are there in IPL 2024 Auction?

There are 19 sets - two sets each of capped batters, wicketkeepers, all rounders and fast bowlers, plus two sets each of uncapped batters, wicketkeepers, all rounders, fast bowlers and spinners. There is also only one set of capped spinners in this auction.

The auctioneer will mandatorily call out the first 70 names (the first 10 sets) in the set order but the player name will be drawn randomly. In the accelerated process, the auctioneer will read the list of players created by the IPL governing council after the 10 teams provide their choice of players.
