Mohammed Shami has officially joined Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the IPL 2025 season, securing a contract worth ₹10 crore at the mega auction held in Jeddah on November 24, 2024. This marked a significant moment for both the player and the franchise, as Shami was one of the most sought-after bowlers in the auction.
Shami's entry into the auction came after a stellar performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he emerged as the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets at an impressive average of 10.70.

His exceptional form included three five-wicket hauls, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. However, following the World Cup, Shami faced challenges due to an Achilles tendon surgery that sidelined him for nearly a year, preventing him from participating in the previous IPL season.
During the auction, Shami attracted interest from multiple franchises. The bidding war began with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), followed by Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants. Ultimately, SRH made a decisive move to secure him after KKR appeared poised to sign him for ₹9.75 crore. The Gujarat Titans, his previous team, opted not to use their right-to-match card, allowing SRH to finalize the deal.
Shami's addition is expected to bolster SRH's bowling attack significantly. The team had retained key players like Pat Cummins and Heinrich Klaasen but needed a strong pace option following their runner-up finish in IPL 2024. With Shami's experience and skill set, he is anticipated to play a crucial role in SRH's campaign as they aim for their first title since 2016.
