The next Indian Premier League (IPL) Mega Auction is just weeks away as teams look to finalize squads post their retention of key players. Ten teams are expected to be in intense bidding wars as several big name players got released into the auction.
The last time the big auction happened was three years ahead of the IPL 2022 season when two new teams made their debuts in the lucrative league, making it even a much more competitive tournament.

Like in 2025, all teams were forced to start almost fresh as they had to release some of their key players, but several teams could buy back some of the stars, while some teams could create new stars.
Unlike the mini auction held before every other season, the price to buy players is not big, but has still seen players become crorepatis over the years. In 2022, there were some players who were bought for Rs 10 Crore and more.
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan became the second most expensive Indian buy in IPL history on day one of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction as Mumbai Indians beat off intense bidding war to bring back their former wicketkeeper-batter for whopping Rs 15.25 Crore.
Chennai Super Kings also bought back their former player Deepak Chahar for Rs 14 Crore, making the Indian pacer the second most expensive buy at the 2022 auction.
Also during the IPL 2022 auction, Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, Indian all-rounder Harshal Patel, Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga and West Indies wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran were among the most expensive buys.
Iyer, bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 12.25 Crore, was the first player to cross the Rs 10 Crore mark. Patel was later bought for Rs 10.75 Crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore, who also brought back Hasaranga for the same price.
Pooran also was sold for Rs 10.75 Crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad, who also bought India all-rounder Washington Sundar for Rs 8.75 Crore. Pooran is now the joint second most expensive retention at Rs 21 Crore.
Speaking of Indian all-rounders, Krunal Pandya was sold to new comers Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 8.25 Crore, while Nitish Rana was bought back by KKR for Rs 8 Crore.
Meanwhile, South African pacer Kagiso Rabada was sold for Rs 9.25 Crore to Punjab Kings, who also bought Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan for Rs 8.25 Crore. Some uncapped Indian players who came into the auction with a base price for Rs 20 to 40 Lakh also earned big.
Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan, both retentions for Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction, were bought for Rs 9 Crore by GT and Punjab Kings respectively in the 2022 Auctions.
West Indies pair Jason Holder and Shimron Hetmyer also earned big bucks, bought by Lucknow Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals respectively. England all-rounder Liam Livingstone was bought by Punjab Kings for Rs. 11.50 Crore.
Mumbai Indians splashed the cash on two players. First, England pacer Jofra Archer for Rs.8 Crore and uncapped Australia all-rounder Tim David for Rs. 8.25 Crore. Here is the top 25 most expensive buys in the 2022 IPL Mega Auction:
