IPL Auction 2025: Saudi Arabia Hotel Prices Impacting Auction Venue Selection, BCCI May Turn to This Gulf City

As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prepares for the IPL 2025 auction, it faces a significant hurdle: selecting a suitable venue in Saudi Arabia. A key factor influencing this decision is the soaring hotel prices in the country, making it a challenging task to accommodate the needs of franchise owners and their entourage.

Cricbuzz Report suggested that BCCI has narrowed its choices to Riyadh and Jeddah, although a definitive decision is yet to be reached. While Dubai, the venue for last year's auction, remains on the table, it is not the top preference this time around.

IPL Auction 2025 Saudi Arabia

The BCCI aims to hold the auction during the last week of November, but securing an appropriate venue that can host the extensive IPL delegation is proving to be a considerable challenge.

The escalating hotel costs in Saudi Arabia, particularly in relation to those in Dubai, have become a point of contention. Franchise owners have expressed concerns over the potential impact on their budgets, leading BCCI officials to reassess their options.

Initially, London was considered as a potential venue; however, the decision was abandoned due to the unwelcoming cold weather. As a result, the BCCI and IPL officials are seeking a location that can accommodate the auction for two days, catering to all 10 franchise delegations as well as two major broadcasters, Jio and Disney Star.

In recent developments, the BCCI has released guidelines for the upcoming auction, allowing franchises to retain a maximum of six players. The right-to-match option is also included in the new framework, offering teams flexibility in player retention strategies.

As per the new guidelines, the retention costs for players are tiered, with the first priority costing Rs 18 crore, followed by Rs 14 crore for the second, and Rs 11 crore for the third. The fourth and fifth retentions are set at Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore, respectively, while uncapped players can be retained for Rs 4 crore.

Despite the logistical challenges, Saudi Arabia is emerging as a strong candidate to host the IPL Auction 2025, reinforcing its aspirations to become a global sports hub. The nation has made significant strides in enhancing its international sports presence, although its cricketing prowess remains a work in progress, as indicated by its 33rd position in the ICC Men's T20I rankings.
