Shreyas Iyer has joined Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 mega auction on Sunday (November 24) at a whopping price of Rs 26.75 crore, which means the India batter is now the second most expensive player in the history of the competition.
The former Kolkata Knight Riders captain, who led KKR to the IPL 2024 trophy, was released by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. But the Kings broke the bank to reunite with their former skipper and landed the India star for a gigantic sum.

On the day of the auction, Iyer came as the third player of the auction. Kolkata Knight Riders started their bidding for their former captain but couldn't compete with Delhi Capitals, who had a much superior purse than the Knight Riders.
Shreyas Iyer becomes the second Most Expensive Player with Rs 26.75 crore for now, surpassing Mitchell Starc's Rs 24.75 crore buy which took place in IPL 2024 auction. The current most expensive player is Rishabh Pant who has moved to Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 27 crore.
Punjab Kings also joined the bidding for Shreyas and they persisted in their quest for the India star and ended up getting their player for the record sum. PBKS, who are in quest for their first IPL trophy, has now made a significant acquisition with the player.
Since his IPL debut in 2015, Shreyas Iyer has been a consistent performer, renowned for his elegant stroke play and calm demeanor under pressure. He quickly cemented his place as a dependable middle-order batter, earning the captaincy of the Delhi Capitals in 2018. Under his leadership, the Capitals reached their maiden IPL final in 2020, a testament to his tactical acumen and ability to rally the team during crunch moments. His knack for anchoring innings and shifting gears when needed made him indispensable in the league.
