In the recent two-day mega auction event for IPL 2025, Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired 15 new players, bolstering their squad to a total of 20, including five retained players. Their top signing is Ishan Kishan, who was secured for a hefty sum of Rs. 11.25 crores. Following closely behind is Mohammed Shami, who was brought in for Rs. 10 crores.
Among the signings that may have flown under the radar, the acquisition of 26-year-old Sri Lankan all-rounder Kamindu Mendis for Rs. 75 lakhs holds significant potential. His distinctive bowling skills, combined with his batting talent, suggest that he could very well turn out to be a jackpot for SRH in the upcoming IPL.

Kamindu Mendis represents a rare breed of cricketer who defies conventional positional limitations through his extraordinary versatility. His exceptional ability to bowl with both arms makes him a tactical marvel.
As a left-handed batter, his records are more formidable, especially in Test cricket. Mendis already has 5 centuries and 4 half-centuries in just 8 test matches. He is the first batter with two hundreds in a Test while batting at No. 7 or lower. The Sri Lankan all-rounder has the record of being the first player with a fifty-plus score in each of the first eight Test matches. He has the second-highest Test batting average (91.27) among players with 1000-plus runs.
However, what truly distinguishes Mendis is his ambidextrous bowling prowess, a skill that transforms him from a mere player to a cricketing enigma. By seamlessly switching between left-arm orthodox and right-arm off-spin, he creates a psychological challenge for batsmen that can disrupt the rhythm of the opponent batters. Beyond his bowling and batting credentials, Mendis is also a dependable fielder on the field who embodies modern cricket's athletic demands.
Kamindu Mendis T20 Career
Kamindu Mendis made his international debut for the Sri Lanka cricket team in October 2018. In August 2018, he was shortlisted in Sri Lanka's preliminary squad for the Asia Cup. By October, he joined the T20I squad for a match against England and made his debut he scored 24 runs. In March 2019 he made his ODI debut against South Africa. Later that year, he was selected as the vice-captain for both the Emerging Teams Asia Cup and the South Asian Games. Mendis was named in Sri Lanka's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He also represented Sri Lanka in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.
In a squad filled with star explosive batters, Mendis can play the role of anchoring the innings. Also, his unique spin bowling ability will add an extra dimension to the pace-heavy bowling attack of SRH.
