IPL auction: A make or break time for these stars

By Unnikrishnan
Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh

Bengaluru, January 26: They have given us several heart-stopping moments for us in the IPL. But now in the autumn of their careers, these icons face a make a break for season in 2018.

They will certainly be purchased in the IPL auction on Saturday and Sunday. But will they trigger a price war as they did in the past? Will the franchisees buy them based on their reputation and allow them a chance for one more go at glory?

The IPL auction is interesting for these veterans as well for some of the fresh talents.

Yuvraj Singh

The left-hander had once attracted then IPL record of Rs 14 crore from Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rs 16 crore from Delhi Daredevils. But he's no longer the player that he used to be. Yuvraj had a decent outing for Sunrisers Hyderabad last year scoring 252 runs from 12 matches with two fifties. But the Punjab man now does not figure in Indian team and it looks unlikely that he ever will be too.

He had an underwhelming Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy as well. So, will the profit-minded team owners jostle for Yuvraj?

Harbhajan Singh

The Punjab off-spinner has been a pillar of Mumbai Indians since the first season in 2008 and in fact he skippered them to first IPL title in 2011. But the last two seasons were quite underwhelming - 9 and 8 wickets respectively. He does not figure in the scheme of things of Indian team.

The Mumbai Indians deciding against retaining him could be a portend. Perhaps, Harbhajan Singh will be playing in a different colour jersey this year other than Mumbai's dazzling blue.

Amit Mishra

He has this immense ability to produce those stunning deliveries time and again. His three hat-tricks in IPL stand as testimony, only bowler to do so. But since 2015 his international career has hit doldrums and you may never see him in India blue again.

Combined that fact with his fat base price of Rs 1.5 crore may just put off the franchisees during the IPL auction. His only banking point is his IPL pedigree.

Yusuf Pathan

The big-hitter from Baroda has been with Kolkata Knight Riders ever since moving from Rajasthan Royals. He is also one of the few players who have IPL titles with two different franchises. Even though his stint with KKR marked with polarised performances, the two parties kept a strong bond between them.

But a fruitless 2017, just 143 runs from 15 matches, and his non-retention by KKR this year suggests that they are ready to part ways. The possibility of him dishing out a match-changing effort may entice some teams. But at 35, Yusuf may still fail to attract big bids.
