IPL Auction: Three Times Australian Cricketers Emerged Most Expensive Buys In Indian Premier League History

By MyKhel Team

In the IPL 2024 auction, Mitchell Starc, the seasoned Australian fast bowler, created history by becoming the costliest player ever in the league, commanding an astonishing ₹24.75 crore after a fierce bidding duel between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT).

Preceding Starc's record bid, his compatriot Pat Cummins secured an impressive ₹20.5 crore deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). This highlights the significant impact Australian cricketers have consistently made in the IPL, underlined by their substantial auction values.

Auction 600

The trend of Australians dominating IPL auctions is not new, as there have been previous instances where an Aussie player claimed the title of the most expensive. This attests to the enduring demand for Australian cricketing talent in the lucrative T20 league.

The 2024 auction further emphasized the enduring influence of Australian players in the IPL, with Starc's record-breaking bid adding a new chapter to their legacy in the cash-rich competition.

Glenn Maxwell Price In IPL 2013

A decade ago, Glenn Maxwell was heralded as the rising star in Australian cricket, attracting interest from multiple IPL franchises. Mumbai Indians (MI) secured him for ₹6.3 crore, recognizing his explosive batting and valuable off-spin skills.

Despite his talent, Maxwell faced limited opportunities due to the overseas player quota and MI's star-studded lineup, featuring in just three matches and scoring 36 runs. While he clinched the title with Mumbai that season, Maxwell later found success with Kings XI Punjab and RCB, making a significant impact in subsequent IPL seasons.

Shane Watson In IPL 2016

RCB made a significant addition to their star-studded batting lineup by acquiring veteran Australian all-rounder Shane Watson for a hefty ₹9.5 crore. The team, featuring Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, and AB de Villiers, aimed to end their trophy drought that season.

Despite Watson's modest batting performance of 179 runs in 16 games, he showcased his bowling prowess by taking 20 wickets at an economy rate of 8.58. Despite Kohli's remarkable 973-run season, RCB lost to SRH in the final.

Watson's memorable moment, however, was the challenge he faced from Ben Cutting in the final, a performance that arguably tilted the game in SRH's favor. Watson later joined the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), contributing to their title win in 2018 with a splendid hundred in the final.

Pat Cummins In IPL 2020 Auction

Pat Cummins has been among the veteran Australian bowlers who have time and again pulled out of the IPL to manage their workload with Test cricket. He made himself available for the IPL 2020 auction and naturally garnered a lot of attention from franchises.

After a bidding war among franchises like the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Delhi Capitals (DC), it was KKR who bagged his services for ₹15.5 crore. While they didn't qualify for the playoffs, Cummins had a decent season picking 12 wickets from 14 matches and also scoring 146 runs.

He played two more seasons for the franchise, before pulling out of IPL 2023 and will now ply his trade for SRH next year.
