Since its inception as Kings XI Punjab in 2008, PBKS has viewed the IPL as more than just a cricket league. The franchise's CEO, Satish Menon, claimed that right from the start of the IPL, they viewed it as a scalable business model.
"From day one, we saw IPL as more than a cricket league-it was a scalable business model with high visibility, secure revenue streams, and strong brand-building potential. It was a heady mix of sports and entertainment, which eventually had the potential to deliver huge audiences and revenues," Menon said in a statement.
The 2021 rebranding from Kings XI Punjab to Punjab Kings was a pivotal moment. The shift from a team-centric "Kings XI" to a legacy-centric "Punjab Kings" tapped into regional pride, resonating with fans across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and the global Punjabi diaspora in Canada, the UK, and Australia. The franchise began to position itself beyond the boundaries of cricket, embracing culture, music, lifestyle, and entertainment as part of a broader media-sport brand.
The most headline-grabbing move of the 2025 season came when PBKS acquired Shreyas Iyer for ₹26.75 crore during the November 2024 mega-auction, the second costliest buy in IPL history (after Rishabh Pant ₹27 crore, LSG).
The signing was particularly bold considering Iyer had just led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the 2024 IPL title. The PBKS management identified Iyer as the perfect candidate to lead the cultural and performance reset that the franchise was aiming for.
The investment paid off handsomely. Iyer led from the front, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches, and was among the top five run-scorers of the season. His calm leadership and big-match temperament proved instrumental in PBKS's turnaround campaign.
"Bringing in Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting was about belief. We wanted leadership with calm conviction and one that will bring a strong shift in the mindset," said Menon. This dynamic duo reflected PBKS's aspiration to instil a winning culture and revive fan trust with a "fun and fearless" approach to the game.
Beyond Iyer, PBKS built a balanced squad. They retained seasoned pacer Arshdeep Singh and young Prabhsimran Singh, bought premier spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and left-arm seamer Marco Jansen, and invested in local talents like Priyansh Arya, Shashank Singh, and Nehal Wadhera, reflecting a dual focus on elite talent and regional representation for deeper fan loyalty.

"It took months of hard work before we had the formula in place. We were clear about what we wanted, and we went after it aggressively in the auction," Menon explained.
PBKS's 2025 campaign was their best in over a decade, finishing as runners-up after consistently dominant performances in the league phase and playoffs. The leadership of Iyer, combined with Ponting's clarity of vision, brought the franchise within touching distance of their maiden IPL title.
The team's success was mirrored internationally as Saint Lucia Kings won the CPL 2025, underscoring the effectiveness of PBKS's multi-league model-which enabled scouting synergies, content crossovers, and shared sponsor ecosystems.
PBKS turned heads on social media with their "Sarpanch Sahab" campaign, celebrating Iyer's leadership through a culturally rooted and fan-driven narrative. The nickname, meaning "village head," was coined during the Champions Trophy and adopted virally by fans.
"We wanted to humanise the sport. 'Sarpanch' is a Punjabi term used for the head of a village. As a leader of our team, we wanted to project Shreyas in a similar manner... Now, everywhere Shreyas goes, he is lovingly called Sarpanch Saab," Menon stated further.
The campaign boosted PBKS's engagement rate, social media reach, and user-generated content, solidifying their reputation as one of IPL's most culturally relevant brands.
PBKS's brand value surged to ₹1,195 crore (US$141 million) in 2025 - a 39.6% year-on-year increase, the highest among all IPL teams. The franchise attracted sponsors interested in storytelling, player-driven campaigns, and cultural resonance. "While marquee names drive immediate commercial appeal, building 'cult local heroes' ensures sustained brand loyalty," Menon noted.
The jersey sales of players like Shreyas Iyer, Chahal, and emerging stars like Shashank Singh helped unlock new revenue streams and elevated PBKS's merchandising game.
Looking forward, PBKS aims to expand its merchandise vertical into a lifestyle brand with creator collaborations and influencer-led launches. The franchise is actively tracking fan monetisation metrics like ARPU, lifetime value, and conversion rates to build a robust digital-to-commerce pipeline.
Behind-the-scenes content, interactive formats, and storytelling-driven campaigns are central to PBKS's plan to stay "part of the cultural conversation" year-round.
Menon believes that IPL teams like PBKS are evolving into globally investable brands: "The structure, year-round content, and international visibility make IPL franchises attractive to global capital."
The franchise's multi-league presence, strategic leadership, and content-first approach have already drawn interest from international investors, making PBKS a poster child for sports franchise scalability.
