IPL Bulletin for May 16: Starc Walks Out, Mayank Breaks Down, Kohli’s Test Goodbye, Jadeja Tipped as India’s Next Captain?

IPL Bulletin for May 16: As the IPL 2025 caravan nears its climax, May 16 brought a wave of high-voltage developments-some thrilling, others heartbreaking.

From star pacers bowing out due to injuries to surprise captaincy suggestions and mid-season international departures, the league is in a constant state of flux. Teams are scrambling to plug gaps, redefine strategies, and find late-season heroes amid the drama.

IPL Bulletin for May 16 Starc Walks Out Mayank Breaks Down Kohli s Test Goodbye Jadeja Tipped as India s Next Captain

Lucknow Super Giants' speedster Mayank Yadav has suffered yet another back injury, ruling him out of the season and IPL 2025 altogether. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc's abrupt exit from Delhi Capitals has sent shockwaves through their playoff aspirations. While Gujarat Titans turn to Kusal Mendis in the wake of Jos Buttler's departure, Mumbai Indians prepare for the playoffs with potential reinforcements in Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson.

Amidst all the on-field turbulence, Ravi Shastri opened up on Kohli's Test retirement, and R Ashwin stirred the leadership pot with an unexpected pitch-Ravindra Jadeja as India's next red-ball skipper.

1. Mayank Yadav Breaks Down Again, Ruled Out of IPL 2025

It's a cruel twist of fate for Lucknow Super Giants' speedster Mayank Yadav, who has once again been sidelined - this time from the remainder of IPL 2025 - due to a recurring back injury.

After making an electrifying return this season by dismissing Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya with searing pace, Mayank's bowling radar appeared off-kilter in recent outings. Fans were left puzzled by his reduced speeds, and now we know why.

Having battled a series of injuries post his international debut and even missing the entire domestic season, Mayank had only just returned. But an unfortunate toe stub against a bed, followed by infection and delayed rehab, left him rusted. Though he tried to muscle through the pain, the toll on his body proved overwhelming.

Lucknow Super Giants have since signed New Zealand's William O'Rourke as his replacement for INR 3 crore. The 22-year-old Kiwi pacer brings with him an international pedigree - 36 wickets in 10 Tests, 22 in 17 ODIs, and five from five T20Is. While no like-for-like replacement for the tearaway Indian quick, O'Rourke offers tactical versatility for LSG as they eye a late charge for playoff qualification.

2. Mitchell Starc's Exit Shakes Delhi Capitals

In perhaps the biggest shocker of the day, Mitchell Starc has pulled out of the remainder of IPL 2025, sending ripples through the Delhi Capitals' dugout. Starc's absence - confirmed by the franchise earlier this week - is a hammer blow to a team already reeling from mid-table mediocrity.

His decision, citing workload management and upcoming international commitments, comes at a time when DC need their senior pros the most. With the playoffs looming and the IPL schedule reshuffled due to cross-border tensions, Starc's exit punctures Delhi's plans with surgical precision.

It's more than a numbers game - it's psychological. Starc was the leader of DC's pace pack, and with him gone, the onus falls squarely on the younger crop to shoulder the burden. As the Capitals reshuffle their bowling strategy, their road to the playoffs has grown thornier.

3. Kusal Mendis Replaces Jos Buttler for GT Playoffs

Talk about a late twist in the tale - Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis is set for his IPL debut as he replaces Jos Buttler in Gujarat Titans' squad ahead of the playoffs.

Having turned heads in the Pakistan Super League for Quetta Gladiators - where he struck 143 runs at a fiery strike rate of 168 - Mendis now finds himself thrown into the high-octane IPL playoffs. Buttler's departure, owing to England's home ODI series against West Indies, left a void that Mendis will be desperate to fill.

Interestingly, Mendis has entered the IPL auction multiple times but had never found a taker until now. This opportunity could be career-defining for the elegant stroke-maker. GT currently lead the table, but with playoff battles intensifying, Mendis' temperament will be under the microscope from ball one.

4. William O'Rourke Joins LSG, Jamieson Replaces Ferguson at PBKS

The IPL 2025 has witnessed yet another shuffle as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) signed New Zealand fast bowler William O'Rourke as a replacement for the injured Mayank Yadav. The 22-year-old Indian pacer, who lit up the tournament with his raw pace earlier this season, has been ruled out due to a recurring back injury. His promising return after a long layoff was cut short once again, leaving LSG to turn to the 22-year-old Kiwi sensation. O'Rourke, who has already made his mark across all three formats for New Zealand, joins the franchise at a price of INR 3 crore and brings with him pace, bounce, and a sharp cricketing mind. LSG, sitting in the middle of the table, will be hoping that O'Rourke can plug the gap left by Mayank and deliver crucial spells in their final league matches.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have brought in another New Zealand pacer, Kyle Jamieson, as a replacement for Lockie Ferguson, who has also been sidelined due to injury. Jamieson, a towering figure known for his steep bounce and control, adds much-needed depth to a PBKS bowling attack that has lacked consistency throughout the season. With experience in both the IPL and international cricket, Jamieson's inclusion could provide PBKS with a late-season boost as they aim to salvage pride in their remaining games. The back-to-back injury replacements underline the physical toll of a grueling IPL season, especially one interrupted by the tense geopolitical situation, and highlight the value of having a deep international bench to call upon.

5. Rajat Patidar Back in the Nets, Eyes Key RCB Role

In Bengaluru, there was good news for Royal Challengers fans. Skipper Rajat Patidar has resumed batting, recovering from a finger injury sustained earlier this month.

RCB's talisman, who had missed several games, was seen batting with confidence in the nets. Though he hasn't started fielding yet, the early signs are promising. With two crucial games left in their campaign, RCB are chasing a top-two finish - and Patidar's return couldn't have been more timely.

While his form has dipped post a sensational start - his last five innings haven't crossed 23 - Patidar remains a vital cog, especially in the absence of Devdutt Padikkal and Jacob Bethell. "Patidar's return is more than just about numbers. It's about leadership and belief," said an RCB backroom member.

6. Shastri Opens Up on Kohli's Test Retirement

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri shed new light on Virat Kohli's sudden Test retirement. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri said, "There were no regrets... He mentioned very clearly, there were no doubts in his mind."

The revelation underscores Kohli's calculated decision to step away after 123 Tests and 30 centuries. Shastri recalled how Kohli's intensity across all formats created immense internal pressure. "He has to take all the wickets, all the catches... That much involvement leads to burnout."

Despite believing Kohli could have played "two more years," Shastri acknowledged that Kohli had "given everything" and would now focus on ODIs and franchise cricket. The BCCI and fans might miss him in whites, but Kohli's legacy as India's most successful red-ball captain remains etched in stone.

7. Bairstow and Gleeson Set to Replace Jacks and Rickelton at MI

Mumbai Indians are banking on old hands as they look to seal playoff qualification. With Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton headed home for national duty, MI are set to bring in Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson as their replacements.

Jacks has already returned to India but will be unavailable for the knockouts due to England's ODI commitments. Rickelton, MI's second-highest run-getter, will also exit before the playoffs to prepare for South Africa's World Test Championship final.

Enter Bairstow - the veteran England star who went unsold at last year's auction but remains a box-office draw. "If Bairstow returns to the IPL, he brings firepower and flexibility," said one MI official. With 50 IPL matches under his belt and an average of 34.54 at a strike rate of 144.45, the Yorkshireman could be the game-changer MI needs at the business end.

Gleeson, meanwhile, brings steady white-ball expertise and could offer control in the powerplay or at the death.

8. Ashwin's Wildcard: Make Ravindra Jadeja Test Captain for Two Years

In a bold and intriguing suggestion, Ravichandran Ashwin has urged selectors to consider Ravindra Jadeja as India's Test captain - if only as a transitional figure.

"Let's not forget, Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team. He should be in the conversation," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring, and whispers growing around Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah, Ashwin threw Jadeja into the ring as a "wildcard." According to Ashwin, Jadeja can provide leadership for two years while grooming the next generation.

"It will seem like I'm throwing in a wildcard," Ashwin added with a chuckle. "But Jadeja's cricket brain, field presence, and seniority make him an ideal candidate."
