IPL Bulletin for May 25: DC Stun PBKS, Hazlewood Joins RCB, Dhoni Future Unclear, Zinta Slams Umpire Call
IPL Bulletin for May 25: The Indian Premier League, never short of fireworks or frenzy, lit up once more on May 25 as the 2025 edition delivered a day of drama worthy of a blockbuster finale.
In a Jaipur cauldron where tension crackled like electricity in the air, the Delhi Capitals-already out of the playoff race-roared back to life with a thrilling six-wicket win over the Punjab Kings. Who were chasing a coveted top-two finish.

The hero? A fearless Sameer Rizvi, who unleashed a whirlwind 58 off 25 balls to turn a routine chase into a heart-stopping heist. But while Delhi's jubilant camp soaked in the upset, elsewhere in the IPL universe, tempers flared, squads shifted, and whispers of retirement stirred the pot even further.
Beyond the ropes, the league's off-field theatrics were no less riveting. From Josh Hazlewood's last-minute arrival in Bengaluru to Preity Zinta's explosive outburst over a controversial umpiring call, the IPL delivered its signature cocktail of brilliance, chaos and emotion.
Shreyas Iyer boldly declared the IPL "bigger than the Premier League," while Marcus Stoinis stunned reporters by revealing he'd battled Covid during the break-before hammering bowlers like he never missed a beat. And in the background, the ghost of MS Dhoni's retirement loomed ever larger, his future shrouded in mystery. With the playoffs in sight and chaos on all fronts, May 25 was a day that captured the very soul of the IPL-unpredictable, pulsating, and utterly unforgettable.
1. Delhi Capitals Stun Punjab Kings in Jaipur Thriller
At the heart of this weekend’s drama was an unforgettable showdown at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The Delhi Capitals, already eliminated from playoff contention, pulled off a pulsating six-wicket win over the formidable Punjab Kings.
Chasing a mammoth 207-run target, Delhi’s batting lineup sparkled under pressure. Sameer Rizvi emerged as the unlikely hero, smashing a breathtaking 58 off just 25 balls. His belligerent innings, peppered with audacious strokes and fearless intent, snatched victory away from Punjab in the final over — sealing the game with four balls remaining.
Earlier, Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, had flexed their batting muscle with a commanding 206 for eight. Marcus Stoinis, recently recovered from a bout of Covid-19 during the IPL break, provided fireworks with a 16-ball 44 that electrified the crowd. Yet, despite their batting heroics, Punjab’s bowlers failed to tame Rizvi’s late blitz, and Delhi walked away with a win that might not matter in points, but reverberates with pride and purpose.
2. Hazlewood Finally Joins RCB in Lucknow
In a development eagerly awaited by Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans, Australian speedster Josh Hazlewood finally joined the RCB camp in Lucknow. With the playoffs just around the corner, Hazlewood’s arrival bolsters RCB’s bowling unit significantly.
The Aussie had been mulling over his return, with whispers suggesting he would skip the remainder of IPL 2025 to prepare for the World Test Championship final. However, those fears were put to rest as Hazlewood landed in India, adding firepower to an RCB side hungry for their maiden IPL title.
3. Punjab Kings’ Top Two Dreams in Jeopardy
The implications of the loss to Delhi Capitals run deep for Punjab. Their aspirations of a top-two finish — which would have granted them a cushion of an extra qualifier match — now hang by a thread.
Stuck at 17 points after 13 matches, PBKS now face a do-or-die encounter against Mumbai Indians. Even a victory might not suffice unless RCB lose to Lucknow Super Giants or win without a significant NRR swing. Simply put, Punjab must win and hope the stars align elsewhere.
4. Preity Zinta’s Anger Boils Over Umpiring Blunder
As the dust settled in Jaipur, a furious Preity Zinta — co-owner of PBKS — took to social media to express her displeasure at what she termed an “unacceptable” third umpire mistake. The controversy stemmed from a moment in the 15th over of Punjab’s innings when Shashank Singh’s lofted shot was intercepted on the boundary by Delhi fielder Karun Nair.
Nair himself signalled that his foot had touched the rope, yet the third umpire saw no conclusive evidence and awarded only a single run. Zinta, livid at the decision, later claimed that even Nair confirmed it was a six. She posted a fiery message on X:
“In such a high-profile tournament with so much technology at the Third Umpire's disposal, such mistakes are unacceptable. I spoke to Karun after the game & he confirmed it was DEFINITELY a 6! I rest my case!”
In a game decided by such fine margins, one can understand Zinta’s exasperation.
5. Shreyas Iyer: “IPL is Bigger Than the Premier League”
Post-match, Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer offered a philosophical take on the defeat — while also drawing an audacious comparison. "The IPL is bigger than the Premier League," Iyer said, highlighting the league’s competitive parity and unpredictability.
His comments came on the back of three consecutive upsets, with already-eliminated teams defeating playoff qualifiers. "Every team is equally poised. You need to stick to the present rather than dwelling on what happened today," he said.
He admitted his side misread the pitch and failed to execute their bowling plans effectively, especially in the death overs. However, he maintained belief in the squad and promised lessons would be learnt.
6. MS Dhoni’s Future Remains a Mystery
As Chennai Super Kings prepare for their final league fixture against Gujarat Titans, the big question looms: Is this the end of the road for MS Dhoni?
Assistant coach Sridharan Sriram offered little clarity. “We really don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said at the pre-match press conference. Dhoni himself has reportedly not taken a decision and will use the next eight months to assess his fitness and form before confirming his future. as per report on indiatoday.
While the season has been turbulent for CSK, Sriram believes there’s a clear roadmap ahead, thanks to the tactical minds of Fleming, Dhoni and Gaikwad. However, with CSK’s campaign faltering and fans desperate for clarity, the silence around Dhoni’s future continues to be deafening.
7. Why Rajat Patidar Was Fined More Than Pat Cummins
A curious incident in the recent clash between RCB and SRH left many fans puzzled — why did Rajat Patidar, who wasn’t even captaining RCB on the field, receive a stiffer fine than SRH’s Pat Cummins?
It turns out, RCB’s match against SRH was their second slow over-rate offence this season. As a result, regular skipper Patidar was slapped with a ₹24 lakh fine. Each player in the team, including the Impact Player, was fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of match fees.
In contrast, Pat Cummins copped only ₹12 lakh, as it was SRH’s first offence. Patidar, despite not captaining the team on the day (that role went to Jitesh Sharma), was still held accountable as RCB's official skipper for IPL 2025.
To make matters worse for RCB, the match itself ended in humiliation. Despite a flying start in the chase of 232, the side collapsed spectacularly, losing seven wickets for 16 runs. Their defeat pushed them down the standings, further complicating their road to a top-two finish.
8. Marcus Stoinis: “I Had Covid During the Break”
Punjab Kings’ all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, whose fiery knock of 44 off 16 was one of the highlights in the clash against DC, revealed he had been struck by Covid-19 during the IPL break. as per report on indiatoday.
“I actually didn't have any nets before this game. I had Covid, which we don't speak about much anymore,” Stoinis admitted candidly. The Australian revealed he spent time recovering at home before flying back to India, skipping the first match after the restart.
Despite the lack of practice, Stoinis looked in imperious touch. He also questioned Delhi’s bowling strategy, surprised they didn’t deploy more slower deliveries against him. “It’s always difficult to go all guns blazing at the end. But I was ready. They didn’t bowl as many slower ones as expected.”
He also declared himself fit to bowl, having not yet picked up a wicket this season, and expressed confidence in adapting tactics based on the pitch and wind conditions.
