Historically, winning the toss has been a significant factor in IPL finals. Out of the 16 finals held before the IPL 2024 final, the team winning the toss went on to win the match 10 times.
This trend includes the IPL 2023 final, where Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinched a thrilling victory over Gujarat Titans after MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bowl first. CSK's strategic decision was rewarded with a win by five wickets, highlighting the potential advantage of making the right call at the toss.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, under the leadership of Pat Cummins, finds themselves in their third final appearance in 2024. Their sole IPL title came in 2016, a victory notably secured after winning the toss against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). On that occasion, SRH, captained by another Australian, David Warner, opted to bat first and successfully defended their total.
Interestingly, when SRH last reached the final in 2018, CSK won the toss and elected to bowl first, eventually winning by eight wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Delving into the broader statistics, teams have opted to bat first nine times after winning the toss in IPL finals and emerged victorious on six of those occasions. SRH's 2016 triumph falls into this category, reinforcing the notion that batting first can be advantageous in high-pressure finals.
However, there have been exceptions, such as the 2022 final where Rajasthan Royals chose to bat first but lost to Gujarat Titans.
Previous champions Deccan Chargers, representing the earlier Hyderabad franchise, won the title in 2009. In a twist of fate, their captain Adam Gilchrist lost the toss against RCB but still managed to secure a win, proving that losing the toss doesn't spell doom for a team.
