IPL lacks cricketing spirit:, says Azad

By Staff
{image-indian premier league_03052008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Darbhanga, May 3: Former Test cricketer and national president of the BJP's sports cell, kirti Azad today charged the BCCI of promoting commercial interests instead of cricket in their latest extravaganza IPL Twenty-20 Tournament.

Speaking to mediapersons here, Mr Azad said, ''The BCCI's venture into the commercial arena, promoting big corporate houses, is also encouraging vulgarity by indulging in cheergirls in the tournament. ''It is also damaging our culture and will adversely affect the mindset of children watching the tourney on TV sets,'' he added. He further alleged that cricket was of secondary importance in the IPL contests while indecent activities in the name of entertainment had been given primary importance as matches were being delayed because of mismanagement and inefficiency in the administration which was unprecedented in the previous tournaments.

He said such a situation had arisen because there was lack of cricketing spirit and the BCCI was concerned only about vested interests.

''The Sreesanth-Harbhajan episode is a clear example of the lack of sportsman spirit,'' he added.

He also approved of the ban imposed on Harbhajan Singh for slapping Sreesanth.
