The much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) Mega Auction 2025, which will see over 500 players go under the hammer, is scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) increased the purse of the franchises by a further Rs 10 Crore from the previous mini auction in 2024. The purse for each franchise for IPL 2025 was increased to Rs 120 Crore.

But teams will go into the upcoming big auction with differing purses after the retention process. The biggest ever expenditure in the IPL Auction happened in 2022, but that record is expected to broken during the two-day auction, which starts on Sunday (November 24).
In the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, over Rs 500 Crore was spent by the 10 franchises, breaking the previous high from the 2018 IPL Mega Auction, when over Rs 400 Crore was spent by just eight franchises.
As expected, the mega auctions have seen an increase in the amount spent by the franchises. In IPL 2014 Mega Auction, the eight founding members of the lucrative league took the spending barrier past Rs 200 Crore for the first time.
In the recent IPL 2024 auction, the Rs 200 Crore-mark was breached for the first time in a mini auction as franchises broke the bank to land players, especially a record-breaking buy of Australia pacer Mitchell Starc and the second biggest buy of his compatriot Pat Cummins.
This season has already seen some franchises burn over fifty percent of their purse before going into the auction as retention of their core and key players came at a big cost. But that will still not stop them from spending at the big auction, where they could break another record.
Over the years, the spending by the franchises has risen thanks to the swelling purse. The early years saw the transaction made in United States Dollars (USD) before they were made in Indian Rupee (INR) from 2014.
