IPL Opening Ceremony Over Last 10 Years

IPL Opening Ceremony 2015

The 2015 IPL opening ceremony at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, was a star-studded spectacle featuring Bollywood’s biggest names. Hrithik Roshan mesmerized the crowd with his flawless dance moves on “Bang Bang”, “Tu Meri”, and “Dhoom Again”, while Shahid Kapoor brought unmatched energy, performing “Gandi Baat” and “Dhan Te Nan”.

Anushka Sharma added glamour with her elegant performance, and Farhan Akhtar rocked the stage with his live band, engaging the crowd in a musical frenzy. Saif Ali Khan, the event’s host, kept the audience entertained, leading to the Captains’ Oath Ceremony, where team captains pledged sportsmanship.

IPL Opening Ceremony 2016

The 2016 IPL opening ceremony, held at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Mumbai, was a spectacular fusion of international and local musical talent. Making his India debut, American singer Chris Brown headlined the event with his signature R&B and hip-hop style, delivering an electrifying performance.

Joining him were renowned artists DJ Axwell and DJ Major Lazer, who brought a dynamic electronic music vibe, getting the crowd on their feet. Bollywood’s Ranveer Singh set the stage on fire with his high-energy dance act, while Jacqueline Fernandez added glamour with a mesmerising performance. Singer Yo Yo Honey Singh performed his chart-topping hits and Katrina Kaif wowed the audience with her stunning dance routine.

IPL Opening Ceremony 2017

The 2017 IPL season took a unique approach by moving away from a centralised opening ceremony, instead hosting separate events at each venue, celebrating the rich cultural diversity of India. Each of the eight host cities—Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Pune, Indore, and Rajkot—held its own mini-ceremony, featuring regional artists, folk performances, and Bollywood stars.

Tiger Shroff delivered a stunning dance performance in Rajkot, while Riteish Deshmukh brought Marathi flavour to Pune’s celebration. Amy Jackson captivated fans with a dazzling act in Hyderabad, and Benny Dayal’s live musical performance in Bangalore enthralled the audience. The ceremonies showcased traditional dances, folk music, and fireworks, allowing fans nationwide to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

IPL Opening Ceremony 2018

The 2018 IPL opening ceremony at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium was a star-studded spectacle featuring electrifying performances by Bollywood celebrities. Varun Dhawan kicked off the event with high-energy dances to songs from Judwaa 2, while Prabhudheva mesmerized the audience with his iconic moves on classics like "Urvashi" and "Muqabla."

Tamannaah Bhatia showcased India's linguistic diversity with a medley of songs in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. Jacqueline Fernandez captivated the crowd with her dynamic performance, and Mika Singh engaged fans with lively renditions of popular tracks. The grand finale belonged to Hrithik Roshan, who delivered a mesmerizing dance sequence, leaving the audience spellbound.

IPL Opening Ceremony 2019

In 2019, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a significant decision to cancel the traditional Indian Premier League (IPL) opening ceremony. This move was in response to the tragic Pulwama attack, reflecting a gesture of solidarity and respect towards the affected families.

The funds allocated for the ceremony, amounting to ₹20 crore, were redirected to support the families of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who lost their lives in the incident. Instead of the usual grand festivities, the 2019 IPL season commenced with a solemn tribute to the Indian Armed Forces. Military bands performed at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai before the opening match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

IPL Opening Ceremony 2020

The 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) did not feature an opening ceremony. In November 2019, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to discontinue the annual event, citing it as a "waste of money" due to limited fan interest and high costs associated with performers.

This decision was made prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Strict health protocols were implemented, and to minimize risks, the traditional glitzy opening ceremony was omitted reflecting a strategic shift in focus towards the cricket matches themselves. Consequently, the 2020 season commenced without the traditional inaugural festivities.

IPL Opening Ceremony 2021

The 2021 IPL season commenced without a traditional opening ceremony due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prioritised safety, opting for a straightforward launch with the first match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore on 9 April at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

Unlike previous editions, there were no live performances, fireworks, or grand celebrations. However, in a heartwarming gesture, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah invited members of the Differently Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI) to mark the beginning of the tournament. This invitation was a significant step towards inclusivity, highlighting the talent and resilience of disabled cricketers in India.

IPL Opening Ceremony 2022

In 2022, IPL’s 15th edition returned with full-fledged celebrations, culminating in a spectacular closing ceremony at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. A.R. Rahman headlined the event, delivering a mesmerising musical journey through some of his greatest hits.

Accompanied by Benny Dayal, Mohit Chauhan, and Neeti Mohan, the performance featured timeless classics like “Jai Ho”, “Maa Tujhe Salaam”, and “Dil Se”, creating an emotional connection with fans. The event also featured a special segment celebrating 15 years of IPL, reliving iconic moments from past seasons. A stunning laser show and fireworks display lit up the night, marking the grand culmination of IPL 15, blending music, nostalgia, and the thrill of cricket into an unforgettable spectacle.

IPL Opening Ceremony 2023

The 2023 IPL opening ceremony, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, was a vibrant celebration blending contemporary music and dance. The event commenced with Arijit Singh, who captivated the audience with soulful renditions of his popular tracks, setting an emotive tone for the evening.

Following this, Tamannaah Bhatia and Rashmika Mandanna delivered an energetic dance performance, showcasing their versatility and adding a dynamic flair to the proceedings. The ceremony also featured a stunning drone show, illuminating the night sky and symbolising the innovative spirit of the IPL. This fusion of musical artistry and technological spectacle set an exhilarating tone for the matches to follow.

IPL Opening Ceremony 2024

In 2024, the IPL's opening ceremony at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff ignited the stage with high-octane dance performances, blending martial arts and dance, and performing to a medley of hit songs, including "Jai Jai Shiv Shankar", "Main Tera Hero", "Hare Ram Hare Krishna", and "Mast Malang".

Renowned singers Sonu Nigam and A.R. Rahman captivated the audience with their musical renditions, including patriotic songs like "Vande Mataram", resonating deeply with the crowd. The inclusion of singers Neeti Mohan and Mohit Chauhan added to the musical diversity, offering a blend of contemporary and classical tunes. The ceremony concluded with a spectacular fireworks display, embodying the grandeur and excitement synonymous with the IPL.

Over the past decade, the IPL opening ceremonies have showcased a rich tapestry of performances, blending Bollywood glamour, international music, and regional artistry, reflecting the diverse cultural landscape of India.
