In 2019, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a significant decision to cancel the traditional Indian Premier League (IPL) opening ceremony. This move was in response to the tragic Pulwama attack, reflecting a gesture of solidarity and respect towards the affected families.

The funds allocated for the ceremony, amounting to ₹20 crore, were redirected to support the families of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who lost their lives in the incident. Instead of the usual grand festivities, the 2019 IPL season commenced with a solemn tribute to the Indian Armed Forces. IPL Opening Ceremony 2021

The 2021 IPL season commenced without a traditional opening ceremony due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
