IPL Plots Major Expansion, 94 Matches Possible With A Calendar Revamp Post 2027
The Indian Premier League (IPL) could witness a significant expansion in the coming years, with chairman Arun Dhumal indicating that the tournament may grow from 74 matches to 94. This means that the franchise-based cricketing extravaganza could be provided with a larger window in the international calendar post-2027.
Speaking about the league's future, Dhumal acknowledged a noticeable dip in interest in certain bilateral series, suggesting that this shift could open doors for franchise leagues like the IPL to expand further. He emphasized that discussions would take place when the next International Cricket Council (ICC) Future Tours Programme (FTP) is drafted after 2027.

Current IPL Working Window Framework
At present, the IPL operates within a tight window from mid-March to the end of May. Extending beyond this period poses logistical challenges due to the onset of the monsoon in parts of India. Dhumal noted that increasing the number of matches within the existing timeframe would lead to more double-headers, which are not ideal from a broadcasting perspective.
"To move from 74 to 94 games, we really need a bigger window," Dhumal said, adding that expanding the number of teams from 10 to 12 is not currently under consideration due to scheduling complexities. He pointed out that even with the existing teams, increasing the number of fixtures is feasible if the calendar allows it.
Dhumal also highlighted a broader global trend, where cricket boards are increasingly prioritising domestic leagues. He referenced competitions such as The Hundred, Big Bash League, International League T20, SA20, and Caribbean Premier League as examples of boards adapting to changing audience preferences.
"If this trend continues, countries may opt for fewer bilaterals or those that make more financial sense. That could help create a larger window for the IPL," he explained.
What Is The Road Ahead?
Looking ahead, Dhumal suggested multiple possibilities, including trimming less popular bilateral series or identifying alternative windows in the global calendar. One such option could be the September-October period, which falls between the end of the English season and the start of the Australian summer.
With the current FTP cycle locked until 2027, the IPL's expansion plans hinge on upcoming negotiations with global cricket stakeholders. If successful, the league could enter a new phase with more matches, greater reach, and an even bigger footprint in world cricket.
