IPL Retention 2025: Kolkata Knight Riders are reportedly unsure about retaining Andre Russell and are considering releasing the West Indies all-rounder from their IPL 2025 retention list ahead of the mega auction.
As per a media report from RevSportz, KKR have decided to retain four players for the upcoming IPL season, and Andre Russell is more likely than not to be out of that list.

This news will come as a massive shock to Knight Rider fans, as Russell has become synonymous with the franchise since signing for it in 2014. The Jamaican has been ever-present in the line-up over the entire decade, hitting double digits in appearances in all but two seasons.
One of the main reasons why Andre Russell might not be a part of the KKR line-up any more is due to his injury-prone body. The player, who turned 36 in April, had an injury-ravaged campaign in 2023, missing a number of important games.
He was less fragile in last season’s title-winning campaign for KKR, but a question mark remains over Russell’s match fitness, especially now that he is on the wrong side of his thirties.
Another reason might be that the impact player rule, which was introduced in 2023, has reduced the importance of all-rounders in the IPL. Under this new rule, captains can replace one player with a substitute during a match, thus allowing for a bowler to replace a batter or vice versa.
As such, clubs do not need to rely on a single player to fulfil both batting and bowling duties any more, so it makes less sense for KKR to occupy an overseas spot for an ageing player.
Russell’s output with the bat has steadily diminished in the last three seasons. His terrific performances with the ball last season, where he finished with 19 wickets, might have been a saving grace, but KKR is reportedly unmoved, thus ending their glorious decade-long association.
