IPL Retention: With just five days left for the teams to announce their retention list, a rare scenario has come up in which as many as four players, who were captains last season, could take part in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
The IPL governing council has allowed up to six retentions each for all the ten teams. Franchises have the option to use the option and retain six players before the auction or pick three or four players to keep the option to use the Right To Match option open at the auction table.

The salaries of the players depend on the order they are retained. As per reports, the first player to be retained will get Rs 18 crore, while the second player on the retention list is slated to get Rs 14 crore.
Franchises are facing problems deciding the pecking order of their retention list. There are also players looking to continue in the leadership role despite the management thinking otherwise. The complex situation is only going to push some more big names in the mega auction.
Let's have a look at four IPL 2024 captains who are likely to feature in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Rishabh Pant: The Delhi Capitals captain is very likely to feature in the IPL 2025 mega auction if he is not retained as captain. GMR Group has taken over the operations of the men's IPL team of Delhi Capitals, and that has made the formalities complex. Teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are closely observing the developments at DC.
KL Rahul: Lucknow Super Giants aren't keen at having KL Rahul as their captain. If reports are to be believed, KL Rahul and LSG have already parted ways. The wicketkeeper-batter is being linked to RCB, and he looks all set to be another star attraction at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Shreyas Iyer: The KKR captain won the IPL 2024 trophy, but his stay with the three-time champions looks uncertain. Reports have suggested that KKR want Andre Russell as their first retention, and Iyer has expressed reservation against the move. If a solution is not worked out, Shreyeas Iyer can join Pant and Rahul in IPL 2025 mega auction.
Faf du Plessis: The 40-year-old has failed to win a trophy in his last three years as RCB captain. The age factor can also go against South Africa. He can very likely be the fourth player, who was captain in IPL 2024, to feature in the IPL auction 2025.
