IPL Retention: The IPL 2025 retention has been in news for the last few months, and it is set to make only bigger headlines in the upcoming weeks.
The IPL governing council has released the retention rules, and the ten teams are now left with the task of finalising and submitting the list of their retained players by October 31.

Eyes will be on the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who are under a transition phase under new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. The new uncapped rule for veteran Indian cricketers has almost confirmed MS Dhoni's participation in the IPL 2025.
A maximum of two uncapped players can be retained by franchises for a price of Rs 4 crore each. Further, a maximum of five capped players can be retained.
The first retention would cost a team Rs 18 crore, while Rs 14 crore will have to be shelled out for players retained as the second choice. Further, the player to be retained on the third slot would get Rs 11 crore. For the next two retentions, the amount to be deducted will again be Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore respectively.
Ravindra Jadeja was retained for Rs 16 crore ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction. He was being considered as the next CSK captain after MS Dhoni back then.
The scenario has changed this time around. Ruturaj Gaikwad has already led the team for an entire season, and should be CSK first retention pick. The right-hand opener is also considered as one of the most gifted and talented batters in India.
Does that mean that Jadeja would be retained behind him at Rs 14 crore - Rs 2 crore less than his previous salary? The other scenario could be that Jadeja is retained as the fourth-choice player which can take his salary to an extra Rs 2 crore to Rs 18 crore.
However, one should note that all the money being used to retain the players would be directly deducted from the auction purse of the team. Also, Jadeja, who will celebrate his 36th birthday in December, is now a retired T20I cricketer, and spending Rs 18 crore on him might not be in CSK's plan. However, his worth as an all-round option still deserves that top bracket.
CSK also have star players like Matheesha Pathirana, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell. Each of these players would be on CSK's radar once again, and using the available purse judicially would become crucial.
