IPL tax case: Bombay HC makes Pawar respondent

Mumbai, May 5: The shadow of IPL has once again caught up with the Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar.

The Bombay High Court issued a notice directing that Pawar and the Union of India be made respondents to the PIL filed by Shiv Sena leader, Subhash Desai concerning the levy of entertainment tax on IPL.

The court reprimanded the Congress party, whose leaders have been caught up in the IPL controversy, with Minister of State for External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor quitting office due to the controversy.

"Is there any code of conduct for ministers holding posts in sports bodies?" the court asked.

Considering that Pawar had earlier been dragged into the IPL controversy, the court allowed the Desai to make Pawar accountable in the case.

In his petition, Desai said that the state goverment decided to levy the entertainment tax on IPL in Jan 2010, but it failed to implement the decision.

The hearing of the case has been adjourned till Jun 22.
