IPL to scrap Impact Player Rule? BCCI seeks feeback from Franchises; What does it mean?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sought feedback from all IPL franchises on the future of the Impact Player rule, putting the controversial regulation back under the spotlight ahead of the 2027 season.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has asked franchises to discuss the rule with their respective cricket operations teams and submit consolidated feedback by August 31.

The request was part of a broader communication seeking views on cricket operations, including umpiring, practice sessions, playing conditions and match-day matters.

The development is significant because the Impact Player rule had previously been confirmed to remain in place through the 2027 IPL season. During the 2026 captains' meeting, a majority of franchise captains reportedly expressed reservations about the regulation.

Introduced in IPL 2023, the rule allows teams to replace one member of their playing XI with a substitute during a match, giving sides greater tactical flexibility.

"As discussed in the IPL 2026 Captains' Meeting, it was agreed that feedback would be collected from all franchises at the conclusion of the tournament on key cricket operations matters. Accordingly, we request you to discuss the following areas with your Cricket Operations teams and share your consolidated feedback with us," the BCCI/IPL mail was quoted as written by Cricbuzz.

What is The Impact Player Rule?

The Impact Player rule allows each IPL team to substitute one player during a match, effectively giving teams an additional tactical option. Before the match, teams name their playing XI along with substitutes, from whom an Impact Player can be selected. The replacement can bat, bowl and field with the same rights as a regular player.

Will IPL scrap Impact Player in IPL 2027?

The BCCI's latest request does not mean the rule has been scrapped or changed. It currently remains part of the IPL regulations, but the franchises' feedback could influence the board's eventual decision on its future.

The regulation has divided opinion. Players including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill have raised concerns that it reduces the importance of genuine all-rounders.

The Impact Player rule was supposed to be in play at least till IPL 2027, which will conclude the current cycle of the competition. But BCCI's sudden approach now may mean the abolition of the rule come next season, but nothing is confirmed as of now.

The IPL 2027 is expected to start on March 10 next year. The competition is set to continue till May 15, but the dates are subject to change.
