Ireland's Aimee Maguire Banned from Bowling in International Cricket

By MyKhel Staff

Ireland's teenage spinner Aimee Maguire has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after an independent assessment confirmed that her bowling action is illegal.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the decision following a detailed evaluation of Maguire's action.

The 18-year-old was initially reported by match officials for a suspect action during the first ODI of the ICC Women's Championship series against India in Rajkot on January 10.

ICC Assessment Confirms Illegal Action

Maguire subsequently underwent a bowling assessment at the ICC-accredited testing centre in Loughborough, United Kingdom, on January 21. The analysis revealed that her elbow extension exceeded the 15-degree limit permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations.

An official ICC statement confirmed the suspension, stating: "In accordance with clause 6.1 of the regulations, Aimee is immediately suspended from bowling in international cricket. Her suspension will remain in effect until she undergoes a re-assessment of her bowling action which confirms that she can bowl with a legal action."

Cricket Ireland Stands by Maguire

Following the announcement, Cricket Ireland reaffirmed its support for the young spinner. High-Performance Director Graeme West emphasized the backing Maguire has received from her teammates and coaching staff.

"The staff and players are rallying around Aimee, reassuring her that she will return with a stronger action and will continue to shine on the international stage for many years to come," West said.

He further highlighted the resources available to Maguire to help her make a successful return. "The experience and expertise that we possess within our high-performance coaching and support services at Cricket Ireland will provide Aimee with the care, support, and guidance to deliver the remedial programme."

Maguire's Journey So Far

Maguire made her international debut in 2023 and has since earned 20 caps, claiming 25 wickets across formats. While this setback halts her progress temporarily, she remains a promising prospect for Ireland's bowling attack.

The young spinner will now work towards refining her action under expert guidance, with hopes of making a strong comeback to international cricket.
