Is Jasprit Bumrah bidding adieu to Test cricket? That impending question has been haunting the India fans for a couple of days now.
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif recently ignited speculation about Jasprit Bumrah's future in Test cricket, suggesting that the premier pacer may soon retire from the longest format of the game. Kaif's assessment comes amid visible signs of Bumrah struggling with his fitness and diminishing pace during the ongoing India vs England Test series in 2025.

In the 4-match Test series against England, Bumrah's impact has noticeably lessened over time. Earlier in the series, at Headingley and Lord's, he bowled at speeds exceeding 140 kmph and took multiple five-wicket hauls, maintaining his reputation as India's pace spearhead. However, by the fourth Test at Old Trafford, he managed just one wicket in around 28 overs and rarely exceeded speeds beyond 130 kmph, signaling a significant reduction in his bowling speed and sharpness.
Mohammad Kaif openly expressed concern that Bumrah's physical condition is not fully supporting him, leading to a potential early end to his Test career.
"He is struggling with his body, and due to this, he may have to retire from Test cricket. His speeds have been on the lower side in the Manchester Test. There is no speed in this Test match," Kaif said.
The ongoing series saw India struggling overall, currently trailing 2-1, with Bumrah's workload managed through selective appearances in the five-Test series. The pacer has missed only one match so far, which incidentally, ended up in India's victory.
Despite Bumrah's dip in form and fitness concerns, it is important to note that India's defeats in the series have not been solely attributed to his performance. Experts underline the lack of adequate support from other bowlers as well, which has hampered India's ability to contain England's strong batting lineup. Bumrah remains India's only bowler in the series with two five-wicket hauls, showing flashes of his usual brilliance. Bumrah, amid all the concerns, still has 14 wickets to his name, the best among the Indian pacers.
Although the star player has suffered multiple issues with fitness, Test cricket is something an elite player cherishes. Bumrah, being the phenomenon that he is, would be desperate to represent India in the red ball format, at least for the next few years.
On the contrary, former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond once heightened the concern about Bumrah's back injury, which has troubled the player for a long time. Another serious back issue may potentially end his career, which may prompt him to avoid the wear and tear of Test cricket. Amid this, it is solely up to the player. Workload management is a massive agenda, and he will have to sacrifice certain assignments and commitments to elongate his Test career.
Despite no immediate retirement concerns coming to mind, Bumrah may eventually bid adieu to Tests a bit sooner than his compatriots.
