In the bustling arena of IPL 2024, rumours and concerns regarding MS Dhoni's fitness have caught the attention of fans and critics alike, especially after his unexpected batting position at No. 9 in a recent match against Punjab Kings.

CSK coach Stephen Fleming, however, provided some much-needed clarity on the situation on Thursday during the pre-match press conference ahead of Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad.
Fleming firmly denied any ongoing issues with Dhoni's fitness, emphasising that there was no existing muscle injury affecting the veteran player. "I've told you, there's nothing there in terms of small muscle injury ages ago, but it's only become news now," Fleming stated, asserting that Dhoni's ability to run, keep wickets, and hit effectively remains unhampered.
"We're managing his workload," Fleming explained. The strategic decision to bat Dhoni lower in the order is apparently a preventive measure to avoid any potential risks associated with longer stints at the crease. Dhoni's specific role involves a shorter, more impactful presence at the bat, where he can utilize his prowess in hitting boundaries without the strain of prolonged running.
Fleming further addressed the criticism from former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who suggested that Dhoni batting at No. 9 was detrimental to the team's strategy. Contrary to Harbhajan's remarks, Fleming highlighted the tactical reasoning behind Dhoni's late entry. The aim is to maximize his contribution without risking injury, maintaining a balance that allows Dhoni to influence the game effectively during critical moments.
"We don't want to max it out where we lose him. So it's a delicate balance," said Fleming, underscoring the careful consideration that goes into deploying Dhoni's talents optimally while preserving his long-term physical well-being.
The conversation around Dhoni's role and fitness comes at a crucial time as CSK continues to navigate the competitive landscape of the IPL. With Dhoni's strategic batting and leadership, the team seeks to capitalise on his experience and skill in the crucial final overs of the matches.
