Is RCB Playing MI or CSK in IPL 2026 Opener? Here’s What BCCI Said
Several reports circulating online have claimed that the IPL 2026 season opener has already been decided - with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) set to face Mumbai Indians, or in some versions, Chennai Super Kings.
However, these claims are premature. As of March 3, the BCCI has not released the official IPL 2026 schedule.

What the BCCI Has Actually Said About IPL Schedule
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that the tournament is likely to begin on March 28 and conclude on May 31. However, he also clarified that the full schedule announcement has been delayed due to state election logistics.
"Please wait for two to three days for the IPL schedule. We will release it as soon as possible. We know that it is getting late because elections are being held in three or four states such as Assam, Bengal and Tamil Nadu," Saikia told the Times of India.
He added that the board is awaiting official confirmation of polling dates before finalising fixtures.
There has been no official confirmation of opening match opponents, venues, or phased releases - only speculation.
Why the Schedule Is Delayed
Three major IPL venues are directly impacted by upcoming assembly elections:
- West Bengal (Eden Gardens, Kolkata)
- Tamil Nadu (MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai)
- Assam (Guwahati, used as a secondary venue)
During election periods, state police forces are heavily deployed for polling and counting duties. Providing security for high-profile IPL fixtures becomes a challenge if match days overlap with election schedules.
The BCCI is therefore waiting for clarity from election authorities before locking in dates and venues.
This is not unprecedented. The IPL schedule was also released in phases during election years in 2019 and 2024.
What About the RCB Opener Reports?
Some outlets have reported that RCB will open IPL 2026 against Mumbai Indians or Chennai Super Kings. Others suggest Punjab Kings could be involved.
At this stage, none of these fixtures have been confirmed by the BCCI.
Until the governing body officially releases the schedule, any claims about specific opening matches should be treated as speculation.
Is IPL 2026 Postponed?
No. There is no official indication that IPL 2026 has been postponed. The start date remains expected to be March 28, with the final scheduled for May 31.
The delay concerns only the formal release of the fixtures - not the tournament itself.
IPL 2026 is expected to run from March 28 to May 31.
- The full schedule has not yet been officially released.
- Election-related logistics are causing the delay.
- Opening match reports involving RCB vs MI or CSK are unconfirmed.
Until the BCCI publishes the official fixture list, any circulated schedules should be viewed with caution.
In IPL season, excitement travels faster than press releases. This is one of those moments where patience beats virality.
