Bangladesh cricket fans were given a worrying news on Wednesday (January 24) by it's cricket board (BCB), who stated that their ODI skipper has been diagnosed with a retinal condition in his left eye.
Shakib Al Hasan, aged 36, had complained of visual issues on his left eye and consulted Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad. Multiple medical checkups confirmed that the all-rounder has Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR).

"Shakib has been complaining of subtle issues with his left eye. After consulting Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad and after multiple eye assessments, it was confirmed that he is suffering from Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy of the left eye. It has been decided that a conservative approach will be adopted for managing the issue for now," Senior BCB Physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury said in a statement from BCB.
The expert further didn't reveal if the player will be able to continue with his cricket career or not following the diagnosis but added that there is visual disturbances in such conditions. The news certainly casts a shadow of doubt on his participation in the ICC T20 World Cup later this year.
"Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy is a condition that affects the retina, leading to visual disturbances. The medical team overseeing Shakib's case is optimistic about managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach," Debashis further added.
The news comes after Shakib Al Hasan recently contested in elections from Magura-1 constituency for the Awami League (AL) party and secured victory with 185,388 votes. Kazi Rezaul Hossain, Hasan's closest opponent, received 45,993 votes. The Dhaka Tribune reported that there are 152 centers in the Magura-1 constituency overall.
Since the World Cup ended last year, the top-ranked T20I all-round player has been sidelined by injury. His finger ailment prevented him from playing before Bangladesh's last World Cup match.
In addition to hoping to be included in the Bangladeshi T20 World Cup squad, he was planning to return to action in January in the country's T20 competition. Shakib, who has accumulated 2382 runs at a strike rate of 122.4 in 117 games, has been an important player for Bangladesh in the T20I format. The left-handed batter has also recorded 12 half-centuries with an average of 23.8.
