Usman Tariq should have been the headline for his match-winning spell. Instead, by the end of Pakistan's 32-run victory over the USA in Colombo, the conversation had drifted once again to his bowling action.

The 28-year-old spinner produced a stunning T20 World Cup debut, returning figures of 3/27 to derail the USA's chase of 191. At one stage, he was even on a hat-trick, ripping through the middle order as Pakistan tightened their grip. USA eventually closed on 158/8, but the damage had already been done.

It was a statement performance under pressure. It was also enough to send social media into familiar territory.

Tariq's spell changed the game. With the USA threatening briefly in the middle overs, he struck back-to-back wickets to swing momentum decisively.

Yet as clips of his wickets circulated online, attention shifted from impact to action.The talking point remains the same: the pause in his delivery stride. Tariq's action includes a visible check before release, combined with a slightly slingy, side-on motion. It looks different. It looks unconventional. In slow motion, it looks even more dramatic.
But unusual does not automatically mean illegal.

A pause in the bowling action is legally allowed under ICC regulations. The critical measure is elbow extension; bowlers are permitted up to 15 degrees. Tariq has already undergone official biomechanical testing, including a test at Lahore's National Cricket Academy in May 2025, and was cleared.

His action may appear unique, even awkward to some observers, but the decision on legality rests solely with the ICC, on-field umpires, and match referees. No concerns were raised during the USA match.

This is not the first time his action has attracted scrutiny. Earlier this year, Cameron Green appeared to gesture a throwing motion after being dismissed by him in a T20I against Australia. The optics reignited debate, even though Tariq had passed formal assessments.

For now, the official stance remains unchanged: Usman Tariq is cleared to bowl.
