Ishan Kishan Faces Tough Captaincy Start As SRH Powerplay Struggles Raise Questions

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Ishan Kishan faces an early leadership challenge after his side suffered a six-wicket defeat to defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL 2026 opener.

Speaking on JioHotstar's 'Google Search AI Mode Match Centre Live', former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan highlighted SRH's problematic start as a major turning point in the match.

Ishan Kishan

"Ishan Kishan mentioned after the game that they would have to look at their approach, especially at the start," Pathan said. "If you lose regular wickets, you have to play with more responsibility, which didn't happen."

SRH lost three early wickets in the powerplay - a phase that ultimately limited their scoring momentum despite reaching the 200-run mark.

"They lost three early wickets, and once that happens, it becomes very difficult to push beyond 200. They eventually scored 200, but it wasn't enough on this pitch," Pathan added.

Leadership Pressure Mounts On Ishan Kishan

Leading an IPL franchise for the first time presents its own challenges, and Pathan pointed out that Kishan had to deal with multiple pressure points.

"Kishan was under pressure, and it's never easy when you are leading a side in the IPL for the first time," Pathan said.

He also noted that SRH's bowling resources remain an area of concern.

"He doesn't have the kind of bowling resources. Managing the Powerplay was difficult, and that is an area they will need to improve," Pathan explained.

Despite the early setback, the IPL season remains long, and SRH's ability to correct their powerplay approach - both with bat and ball - could determine how quickly Kishan settles into his new leadership role.
