Ishan Kishan has risen considerably in the pecking order after his sensational 82-run knock off 81 balls against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023 at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
The innings saved India from blushes and his record 138-run partnership with Hardik Pandya helped India post a respectable 266 against Pakistan who had India reeling at 66/4 at one stage of the game.

His innings consisted of nine four and two sixes and the maturity he displayed against the Pakistan bowling unit consisting of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz has floored former cricketers, experts and fans.
Ishan Kishan, usually a top-order batter, adapting and delivering as a middle-order has given wings to his portfolio as a white-ball batter. The likes of Ravi Shastri, Robin Uthappa and Wasim Jaffer have said that the 25-year-old has given a major headache to the selectors.
Notably, Ishan Kishan got into the playing eleven only because of the absence of KL Rahul who is in the squad but not fully fit to play. Head coach Rahul Dravid is expecting KL Rahul to become fit and available for the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2023.
However, the former cricketers have said that pushing Ishan Kishan out won't be an easy thing to do anymore.
"The biggest plus point that Ishan Kishan has is that he plays good cricketing shots, when he looksto hold shape, he plays exceptionally well. One of his other strengths is to throw the kitchen sink at it. He has got a lot of power," Uthappa said on ESPNcricinfo.
"He goes out and plays good shots and when the innings progresses he hits those big shots and that's what he did today as well. He likes to take on the spinners, and that is what he did today. If he continues to do that he will create a huge headache in the selectors minds once KL Rahul is fit," Uthappa added.
Wasim Jaffer praised the Bihar-born cricketer for attacking the spinners and succeeding as a middle-order batter.
"Ishan Kishan's timing from the get go was spot on. He came in four wickets down and even in the balls that he defended, he looked in very good position. He took on the spinners - not his strongest forte - but he played the spinners really well," Wasim Jaffer said while speaking on ESPNcricinfo.
"It is nice to see him batting well in the position that he is not used to and it is a good headache for the selectors when KL Rahul gets fit," he further added.
Further, former India coach Ravi Shastri asserted that Ishan Kishan will push for a spot in India's World Cup squad. He also said Kishan's left-hand batting makes the Indian batting unit more dynamic, adding that India should keep their options open.
"Ishan Kishan will push (for the ODI World Cup). From India's point of view, they need to be flexible. You might need one extra left hander against certain sides to make life easier for the right handers. Even though you have a very good player like KL Rahul, India should keep their options open," Shastri told Star Sports after the India versus Pakistan match.
Ishan Kishan will next be in action when India take on Nepal in their second and last group stage match against Nepal at the same venue on Monday.
