ISL 2024-25 Match Week 2: Goal of the week, save and game of the week

By Sushruta Bhattacharjee

The ISL match week 2 saw some excellent display of football, with the overseas players and local talents combining to deliver action-packed clashes at the start of the season. Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur, and Punjab FC maintained their perfect record in the league so far.

Table-toppers Bengaluru dominated Hyderabad FC, winning by a margin of 3-0. Jamshedpur managed a narrow 3-2 win against Mumbai City FC, while Punjab FC edged a strong Odisha FC team by 2-1.

ISL 2024-25 Match Week 2

There were plenty of goals to go around, with most of the matches being narrow wins with goals from both sides. Let’s have a look at the best matches, goals, and saves from ISL match week 2.

ISL 2024-25: Match of the week - MBSG vs NEUFC

The second week of ISL featured several nail-biting encounters. However, one that left both fans and neutrals at the edge of their seat until the final whistle was Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s 3-2 victory against NorthEast United FC.

After an early goal from Mohammed Ali Bemammer gave the NEUFC a lead, Dippendu Biswas scored a goal in the 10th minute to give the winless Mohun Bagan a chance in the clash.

NorthEast United showed their improvement over the years as they took the lead again with a goal from Alaeddine Ajaraie in the 24th minute, and the Guwahati-based side held on to their slender lead till the break.

After the resumption of the match, Mohun Bagan again restored parity with a 61st-minute goal from defender Subhasish Bose. The tie looked to end in another draw for MBSG in the ISL, but Scottish forward Jason Cummings played the role of a super-sub as he scored right in the death with an 87-minute strike past Gurmeet Singh.

ISL Match Week 2: Goal of the week - Nikos Karelis vs Jamshedpur FC

The ISL match week 2 was a free-scoring one, with none of the six matches ending goalless. A total of 21 goals were scored in the match week, highlighting the attacking prowess on display in the ISL.

The best goal of the week, however, was courtesy of Nikos Karelis of Mumbai City FC. In the entertaining 2-3 loss against Jamshedpur FC on Saturday, September 21, the Greek forward scored a bullet strike that can surely be a goal-of-the-season contender.

Winning the ball near the centre circle in his opponent’s half in the 18th minute, the former Greece international striker held off a challenge from the Jamshedpur defenders to score a screamer from the edge of Albino Gomes’ penalty box.

ISL Match Week 2: Save of the week - Amrinder Singh vs Punjab FC

ISL match week 2 was one for the strikers, but the goalkeepers too had their moments to shine during several close encounters. Mumbai City FC’s Phurba Lachenpa and Kerala Blaster’s Sachin Suresh were in outstanding form for their respective clubs.

However, the cream of the crop was Odisha FC’s Amrinder Singh. The Indian national team's custodian staked his claim as the country’s top goalkeeper with a stunning save in the close 2-1 loss against Punjab FC.

The Bhubaneswar-based outfit was always the second-best in the encounter against Punjab FC, but Amrinder’s saves kept them in the competition for a long time. A wayward backpass from Jerry Lalrinzuala in the 78th minute put Mourtada Fall under pressure, and Asmir Suljic stole the ball to get into a one-on-one situation with Amrinder.

With only the goalkeeper to beat, Amrinder made himself as big as possible and blocked Sujlic’s shot to keep his side’s goal deficit to just one.
