India are set to receive a major boost ahead of their crucial World Test Championship campaign, with Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja expected to return to the Test squad for next month's two-match series against Sri Lanka.

According to a report by The Times of India, the senior duo is in line to make their first Test appearances in 263 days when India begin the series on August 4, with the squad expected to be announced later this week.

The series forms part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle, with India needing a strong result to revive their hopes of reaching the WTC final.

India slipped down the standings following a disappointing home series defeat to South Africa in November 2025, making the Sri Lanka tour a must-win assignment.

Several members of the Test squad recently featured for India A in four-day matches against Sri Lanka A, with Sai Sudharsan and Dhruv Jurel among those impressing with the bat.

Jasprit Bumrah returns with dominant record against Sri Lanka

Bumrah's comeback comes as a major boost for India, given his outstanding record in Test cricket.

Across 52 Tests, the fast bowler has claimed 236 wickets at an average of 19.88, including 16 five-wicket hauls, cementing his place among the world's premier red-ball bowlers.

His numbers against Sri Lanka are even more remarkable.

In just two Tests against the Islanders, Bumrah has taken 10 wickets at an astonishing average of 9.00, including a match-winning 8/47 in the 2022 day-night Test in Bengaluru.

That performance featured figures of 5/24 in the first innings, marking his maiden five-wicket haul in a home Test.

Ravindra Jadeja also boasts exceptional record against Sri Lanka

Jadeja is equally familiar with success against Sri Lanka.

The veteran all-rounder has scored 326 runs at an average of 65.20 while also taking 32 wickets in seven Tests against the island nation.

His finest performance came during the Mohali Test in 2022, when he smashed an unbeaten 175 before claiming 9 wickets in the match, becoming the first player in Test history to score 150-plus runs and take nine wickets in the same game.

Overall, Jadeja has amassed 4,095 Test runs at an average of 38.27 alongside 348 wickets at 25.12, underlining his status as one of the game's leading all-rounders.

Washington Sundar injury could open the door

Jadeja's return could come at the expense of Washington Sundar, who is reportedly battling a hamstring injury sustained during the recent ODI series against England.

If Sundar is unavailable, India are expected to rely heavily on Jadeja's experience as they prepare for spin-friendly conditions in Sri Lanka.
