Jasprit Bumrah Could Play One Ranji Trophy Match Before New Zealand Tests: Report

Jasprit Bumrah could make a brief return to first-class cricket before India's Test series against New Zealand, with the national selectors keen to avoid taking any risks with the premier fast bowler's fitness.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the selectors are considering having Bumrah play at least one Ranji Trophy match before the New Zealand Tests.

The objective is to assess how his body, particularly his knee, responds to the demands of red-ball cricket after a lengthy absence from the format.

Bumrah has not played a Test since India's series against South Africa in November 2025. His workload has subsequently been managed carefully, with the team management placing considerable emphasis on his fitness following his knee problems.

The proposed Ranji appearance would give the selectors a much clearer picture of his readiness than training sessions or match simulations. A first-class game would allow Bumrah to bowl multiple spells across several days and provide the medical and conditioning teams with important data on how he handles sustained workloads.

The Ranji option is not necessarily the only route being considered. Reports indicate that the BCCI could also explore an India A fixture as a possible red-ball outing for Bumrah before the New Zealand series.

India's Test plans are particularly dependent on Bumrah, whose ability to lead the pace attack makes his fitness a priority. The management therefore appears unwilling to send him directly into a demanding overseas Test series without first establishing that he can withstand the workload.

The decision will also have to take the international and domestic calendar into account. With limited opportunities available, the selectors are expected to carefully balance Bumrah's match preparation with workload management.

Amid the other reports, there is a notion that BCCI is unlikely to consider either Mohammed Shami or Auqib Nabi for the upcoming New Zealand series. Shami has continued to impress as he plays in the Duleep Trophy for East Zone, while Auqib is currently in England for county duties with Surrey.
