Jasprit Bumrah Crowned ICC Men's Test Cricketer Of The Year 2024

By MyKhel Staff

Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024, capping off a stellar year in red-ball cricket.

Returning to the format in late 2023 after a lengthy absence due to a back injury, Bumrah re-established himself as a dominant force, delivering record-breaking performances in both home and overseas conditions.

Jasprit Bumrah

Bumrah played a pivotal role in keeping India competitive in the ICC World Test Championship standings. With an incredible tally of 71 wickets in 2024, he was the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket by a significant margin, far ahead of England's Gus Atkinson, who finished with 52 scalps. Bumrah's achievements placed him among an elite group, making him just the fourth Indian bowler to claim over 70 wickets in a calendar year, joining legends like Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev.

His numbers were nothing short of extraordinary-an average of 14.92 and a strike rate of 30.1 across 357 overs bowled. Notably, Bumrah's average is the lowest among all bowlers in Test history who have taken more than 70 wickets in a calendar year.

Stellar Performances in Home and Away Series

Bumrah excelled across all conditions, beginning his year with a series-defining performance in India's win against South Africa in Cape Town. He picked up eight wickets in the match, helping India secure an emphatic eight-wicket victory. At home, Bumrah was instrumental in India's 4-1 series triumph over England, collecting 19 wickets across five Tests.

However, his crowning glory came during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Bumrah delivered a historic performance, bagging 32 wickets across five Tests to claim the Player of the Series award. His efforts not only ensured a memorable series victory but also saw him surpass the milestone of 200 Test wickets, becoming the 12th Indian bowler to achieve the feat. Remarkably, Bumrah now holds the record for the lowest career average (19.4) among bowlers with 200-plus Test wickets.

A Defining Performance in Perth

Among his standout displays, Bumrah's most memorable performance came in the series opener against Australia in Perth. Leading the team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Bumrah produced a match-winning spell of 5/30 in the first innings, dismantling Australia's batting lineup after India had been bowled out for 150.

In the second innings, after India posted a mammoth 534, Bumrah continued his dominance, taking 3/42 to guide India to a resounding 295-run win. The victory marked Australia's first-ever defeat at the Perth venue, cementing Bumrah's reputation as a big-match performer.

Setting New Benchmarks

Bumrah's sensational year has redefined fast bowling in Test cricket, with his remarkable consistency and ability to perform in pressure situations setting him apart. His 71 wickets, achieved at an economy of just 2.96, underline his impact in a format increasingly leaning towards fast scoring.

With his 2024 exploits, Bumrah has firmly etched his name among the all-time greats of Indian cricket, and his ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year award is a fitting recognition of his exceptional contributions to the game.
