Jasprit Bumrah Eyes Olympic Glory, Says India Ready to Dismantle ‘Ultra-Aggressive’ England in Test Series

As India gears up for a high-voltage five-Test showdown against England, Jasprit Bumrah, the country’s fast-bowling talisman, is quietly confident of his team’s ability to withstand and counter the much-hyped 'Bazball’ aggression.

With the next ICC World Test Championship cycle about to begin, the Indian camp is buzzing with anticipation, and Bumrah—fresh from a grueling IPL season—is eager to lead from the front.

Jasprit Bumrah Eyes Olympic Glory Says India Ready to Dismantle Ultra-Aggressive England in Test Series

In a candid conversation on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast with former Australian skipper Michael Clarke, Bumrah reflected on the upcoming tour, the changing face of Test cricket, and a personal dream of donning the Olympic colours.

“I Love Bowling in England” – Bumrah Gears Up for the Challenge

At 31, Bumrah is no stranger to the rigours of international cricket. He’s been India’s pace spearhead for nearly a decade, feared by batters for his uncanny accuracy, sharp seam movement, and that slingy action that produces toe-crushing yorkers at will. His recent exploits Down Under proved he’s far from slowing down—and now, it’s England’s turn to face the storm.

“Playing in England is always a different challenge. I always love bowling with the Dukes ball,” Bumrah said. “The weather, the swinging conditions sometimes, and then when the ball becomes soft, there's always a challenge. So I always look forward to playing in England.”

India’s tour of England kicks off on 20 June at Headingley, and it marks a new chapter in the team’s transition. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired from Test cricket earlier this year, the spotlight is firmly on the likes of Bumrah, who will be among the senior-most figures guiding the younger generation through what promises to be a baptism of fire.

“Ultra-Aggression Has Its Risks” – Bumrah Not Overawed by Bazball

England under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have thrown the traditional Test script out the window. Their ultra-attacking brand of cricket, famously dubbed 'Bazball’, has yielded some eye-catching results. But Bumrah, with his seasoned temperament, isn’t losing sleep over their approach.

“They're playing an interesting style of cricket, which is interesting because I don't really understand it too much,” he quipped, tongue firmly in cheek.

“But as a bowling unit, we always feel confident that when the batters are being ultra-aggressive, on a given day, anybody could run through and get wickets.”

It’s classic Bumrah—understated yet razor-sharp. In his view, England’s aggression is a double-edged sword, and if India’s bowlers stick to their disciplines, there’s every chance they could exploit it to their advantage.

Olympic Dreams: “Who Would’ve Thought?”

While the upcoming Test series is front and centre for now, Bumrah also has his eyes set on a once-unthinkable milestone—competing at the Olympics. With cricket set to return to the Summer Games at Los Angeles 2028, the fast bowler revealed his keenness to be part of the historic moment.

“Yes, you have to be selective,” Bumrah admitted. “Now I've heard there's Olympics in cricket coming as well. So that is something that I'm looking forward to. Who would've thought cricket will become an Olympic sport?”

For an athlete who has represented India across all formats, including in the World Test Championship and the ICC World Cup, the prospect of wearing the tricolour on the Olympic stage is a dream come true.

“Obviously, it is tough for any individual to keep playing everything for so long,” he added. “I've been doing it for a while, but eventually you have to understand where your body is going, what is the important tournament. You have to be a little selective and smart about how you use your body.”

True to his grounded personality, Bumrah doesn’t chase statistical goals. “I don't set goals or look at numbers. Whenever I have [set goals], I've never been able to fulfil them. As a cricketer, I would never want to leave anything and always keep on going.”

New Era Beckons as India Seeks to Rewrite History

With the retirement of stalwarts like Kohli and Rohit, the leadership mantle in red-ball cricket is slowly shifting. Bumrah’s presence is more vital than ever—not just for his bowling brilliance, but for his ability to guide, mentor, and inspire.

As the team prepares to take on England’s 'Bazball' brigade, all eyes will be on how Bumrah and the Indian attack counter the onslaught. And if history is anything to go by, England’s batters would do well not to underestimate the smiling assassin from Ahmedabad.
