‘Jasprit Bumrah Is Special’: Hardik Pandya Lauds MI Pacer After First-Ball Breakthrough vs GT
Mumbai Indians returned to winning ways in IPL 2026 with a convincing performance against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, successfully defending a total of 199 after a string of four consecutive defeats.
Tilak Varma starred with a brilliant unbeaten 101 off just 45 deliveries, anchoring the innings after early setbacks. He found strong support from Naman Dhir, who contributed a valuable 45 as the pair helped MI recover and push the total to a competitive 199/5.

The chase began on a dramatic note when Jasprit Bumrah struck with the very first ball of the innings, dismissing Sai Sudharsan and setting the tone for Mumbai's bowling effort. The pacer, who had gone wicketless in his previous outings, finished with impressive figures of 3-0-15-1.
Hardik Pandya On Jasprit Bumrah's Role In MI
Speaking after the match, MI captain Hardik Pandya addressed Bumrah's unusual usage and immediate impact with the new ball, highlighting his tactical flexibility.
Pandya explained that Bumrah's role is not defined by fixed overs but by match situations. He emphasised that the team uses him where impact is needed most, noting the decision to deploy him early in Ahmedabad was a tactical call aimed at breaking the opposition's momentum.
"Yeah, it's quite fascinating. I've seen a lot of people ask why Jasprit has never bowled the first over. But if you see, it's been 151 appearances, and I think eight or nine times Jasprit has bowled the first over. So I don't think it's a Hardik Pandya problem. It's just that Jasprit Bumrah is so special that you use him wherever it's required for the team, not necessarily at the start. But today, we realised that we really wanted to make an impact with the new ball, and no one's better than him," Pandya replied.
Collective Effort From MI Bowlers
Mumbai Indians' bowling attack complemented the batting display with a disciplined performance. Ashwani Kumar led the charge with outstanding figures of 4/24, while Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar picked up two wickets each to dismantle the Gujarat Titans' batting line-up.
Pandya praised the team's execution, particularly after ending their losing streak, calling the win "very satisfying," especially given MI's historically poor record in Ahmedabad. He also credited the youngsters and the fielding unit for their collective effort in sealing the victory.
MI Climb Up In IPL 2026 Standings
The win helped the Mumbai Indians climb to seventh place on the IPL 2026 points table with four points from six matches, also improving their net run rate. The team now turns its attention to a crucial upcoming clash against the Chennai Super Kings on April 23.
With Tilak Varma's match-winning century, Bumrah's early breakthrough, and a disciplined bowling performance, the Mumbai Indians will hope this victory marks a turning point in their IPL 2026 campaign.
