India are likely to reveal its 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy by January 12. As reported by the Times of India on Monday (January 6), premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to be named vice-captain, provided he is deemed fit.
Bumrah, who captained the team during the first and fifth Tests of the recently concluded five-match series against Australia, is expected to serve as Rohit Sharma's deputy.

The likes of Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya are not in the contention as the former was made part of the leadership group after the T20 World Cup. He was made the vice-captain of the white-ball format. On the other hand, Pandya was the vice captain in both the ODI and T20 World Cup and the experienced campaigner is also overlooked.
Bumrah has been a key member of India's Test leadership group since 2022, making his captaincy debut during the one-off Test against England. He also led the team in two matches of the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which wrapped up on Sunday (January 5).
The BCCI is expected to announce the squads for the upcoming England series and the Champions Trophy later this week.
Bumrah on the other hand was the standout performer for India in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, finishing the five-match series with 32 wickets. Bumrah wasn't only the best player for the Indian side, but was also the standout performer overall which earned him the Player of the Series award.
He broke a plethora of records during the series, which includes Kapil Dev's record in Australia, India's highest rated player in Tests as per the ICC rankings and many more. As he didn't bowl in the final innings of the 5th Test in BGT due to a back spasm, he is likely to be rested for the England series so that he can get fit in time for the Champions Trophy.
