Jasprit Bumrah Steps Aside from Test Captaincy Contention Ahead Of England Tour: Report

Following Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, the Indian men's team faces a critical leadership transition. While many expected star pacer Jasprit Bumrah to step into the role, recent reports indicate he has chosen not to enter the fray for India's next red-ball captain.

According to Sky Sports News, "Jasprit Bumrah has opted out of being India's next Test captain, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant now the front runners."

This development marks a turning point, as Bumrah had previously served as Rohit Sharma's deputy during the Test series against New Zealand at home and Australia away. Despite his earlier interest in the captaincy, Bumrah has now taken himself out of consideration, clearing the path for a new generation of leaders.

Among the frontrunners is Shubman Gill, who many reports claim will be named the new Test skipper.

The stylish top-order batter, who has not yet led India in the longest format, has captained the national side in T20Is, notably during the five-match series against Zimbabwe last July. He was also India's vice-captain in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which India clinched after defeating New Zealand in the final in Dubai on March 9.

Joining Gill in the leadership conversation is wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, another exciting young prospect. Pant made his captaincy debut for India during a five-match T20I series against South Africa in June 2022. Though he's also yet to lead the Test team, his experience and strong performances make him a viable candidate for the vice-captaincy role.

Bumrah's withdrawal from the race doesn't erase his valuable contributions as a leader. He first captained India in Tests during the rescheduled fifth match against England at Edgbaston in July 2022, where he made headlines by smashing 35 runs off a Stuart Broad over-a world record for most runs in a single Test over. Despite his heroics with the bat, India lost that match.

His Test leadership record stands at one win from three appearances-the sole victory coming in Perth against Australia in November 2024. Losses came against England in 2022 and Australia in early 2025.

The 31-year-old speedster, who hails from Ahmedabad, was honoured as the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2024. He also led India in two T20Is against Ireland in August 2023 and was Rohit's deputy during the latter stages of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

As India prepares for a crucial five-match Test series in England starting June 20, the leadership baton is poised to pass to a new face-likely Gill, with Pant in a key supporting role-ushering in a fresh chapter for Indian Test cricket.
