Jasprit Bumrah took oath to come back strongly after Champions Trophy snub, says childhood coach

New Delhi, Aug 29: Jasprit Bumrah cannot forget that no-ball in his opening over which cost him Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman's wicket in the all-important Champions Trophy 2017 final at the Oval.

Zaman got a reprieve after he was caught behind by MS Dhoni off Bumrah, but the pacer and India both paid the price for over-stepping.

Zaman, who got his share of luck, struck his maiden ODI century and guided Pakistan to a desirable victory. Bumrah had a bad outing in the field that day as he leaked 68 runs in his nine overs.

The slinger was hugely criticised by the media as well as cricket lovers for that dreadful performance at Oval. Bumrah, who was rested for the limited-overs series against West Indies, finally seems to have rejuvenated as a bowler in the ongoing India-Sri Lanka ODI series. In his last three matches, Bumrah has already obtained 11 wickets with two more matches left.

He produced his best bowling figures in the 50-overs format with a fifer in the second ODI and also bagged Man of the Match award.

Bumrah’s childhood coach Kishore Trivedi spoke to MyKhel about his comeback.

Speaking over the phone from Ahmedabad Trivedi said, “After returning home he came to my coaching center. I found him extremely dejected and depressed. He was not inclined to resume bowling any time soon. The Indian team failed as a whole but Bumrah was made the villain. I told him to forget the past and resume training.”

Following Trivedi’s advice, Bumrah resumed bowling in the nets at Nirman High School, Ahmedabad.

"Bumraj increased his training time. He was bowling around two hours at a stretch and interestingly, he tried to make his block-hole delivery more precise. It was his asset since childhood. I also advised him to request to India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun to make this special delivery flawless. I would like to give huge credit to Arun for having sharpened all the bowlers with his relentless hard work as well as superb game reading ability.”

According to Trivedi, the 23-year old fast bowler has now been more mature and there are two factors behind his maturity.

Trivedi, who is the father of fast bowler Siddharth Trivedi, clarified, “Firstly Bumrah took an oath while resuming training at my nets after Champions Trophy that he would be back with a bang whenever he gets a recall.”

After guiding India to the victory in the last one-day international against Sri Lanka, Bumrah called up his childhood coach and said, “This was not the test. Touring South Africa in December will be the real test for me.”
