Jasprit Bumrah vs Sanju Samson: T20 World Cup Award Decision Sparks Debate

India's T20 World Cup 2026 triumph over New Zealand continues to generate debate even days after the final, with former South Africa star AB de Villiers suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah may have had a stronger case than Sanju Samson for the Player of the Tournament award.

The discussion has also drawn attention to the ICC's nomination process, which had already finalised an eight-player shortlist for the award before the tournament reached its decisive stages.

ICC shortlist raises questions after Jasprit Bumrah late impact

The ICC had announced an eight-player shortlist for the Player of the Tournament award as part of its fan engagement initiative, allowing supporters to vote for their favourite performer.

However, Bumrah was not included in that shortlist despite his influence throughout the competition.

The final nominees were dominated by batters and all-rounders whose performances had already caught the public eye during the early and middle phases of the tournament.

But as the knockout matches unfolded, Bumrah delivered some of the most decisive spells of the campaign, particularly in high-pressure situations.

In a tournament where teams routinely crossed the 200-run mark and totals near 250 became common, the fast bowler stood out for his control and wicket-taking ability.

Jasprit Bumrah performances strengthened his case

Bumrah finished the tournament with 14 wickets from eight matches, tied for the highest wicket tally alongside Varun Chakravarthy.

What made his performances remarkable was his economy rate of just 6.2 - an extraordinary figure in a tournament dominated by aggressive batting.

The India pacer produced key spells in the semifinal and final, including a decisive burst against New Zealand that helped seal a 96-run victory in Ahmedabad.

Those contributions earned him the Player of the Match award in the final.

AB de Villiers calls the decision a "close call"

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers described the Player of the Tournament decision as extremely tight, suggesting Bumrah's match-winning spells may have deserved stronger consideration.

"It was a really close call between Sanju Samson and Bumrah," de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

"Bumrah was the top wicket-taker, and there were pivotal overs that he bowled which I felt maybe deserved more mention. It should have been closer."

De Villiers also pointed out that fast bowling in Indian conditions is particularly challenging, making Bumrah's impact even more impressive.

He highlighted how the pacer raised his performance level when the stakes were highest.

"When it mattered most in the semifinal and final, he bowled insane overs. I've never seen anything like it," he added.

Sanju Samson remarkable deserved recognition

Sanju Samson ultimately received the Player of the Tournament award after an exceptional batting run during the latter stages of the competition.

The wicketkeeper-batter scored 321 runs in just five matches at a strike rate of 200, including a match-defining 89 in the final.

His consistency and explosiveness played a major role in India's title-winning campaign.

Still, the debate surrounding Bumrah's omission from the shortlist has raised questions about whether pre-tournament nomination systems should allow flexibility once the tournament reaches its decisive stages.

India's dominant campaign

India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium after posting a record 255/5.

The victory made India the first team to win three T20 World Cup titles and the first to successfully defend the trophy.

While Samson's batting earned him the Player of the Tournament award, Bumrah's decisive spells in the knockout rounds ensured that both players played defining roles in India's historic triumph.
