Joe Root overtakes Williamson to become number one ranked Test batter for ninth time, Rohit also gains one spot

By MyKhel Staff

Joe Root dethroned Kane Williamson to become the number one ranked Test batter for the ninth time in his career on Wednesday, July 31. The rise in Root's rating points comes on the back of his stellar run in the just-concluded three-match Test series against West Indies.

Root finished the series as the leading run-scorer. He scored 296 runs at an average of 72.75, and also brought up his 32nd Test hundred in the second Test. The series also saw Joe Root become only the 12th batter to complete 12,000 Test runs.

Williamson dropped to second place, while Pakistan's Babar Azam (equal third), New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell (equal third), Australia's Steve Smith (fifth) and India's Rohit Sharma (sixth) all gained a spot as England's Harry Brook falls four places to seventh after managing to score 197 at an average of 49.25 against West Indies. However, he was dismissed for 2 in his last innings in the third T20I.

England captain Ben Stokes gained four places on the list for Test batters to rise to 30th following his cameo as opener against the West Indies in the third Test.

India stars gain in T20I rankings

Yashasvi Jaiswal jumped to fourth spot in the latest T20I rankings for batters. He scored 80 runs in three matches against Sri Lanka at a strike rate of 177.77. Vice-captain Shubman Gill also jumped 16 paces to 21st in the latest T20I rankings for batters.

Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi - the leading wicket-taker in the series with six scalps, gained eight places to get back in the top 10 and become India's highest-ranked T20I bowler. Axar Patel is occupying the 13th spot, three places behind Bishnoi.

India pacer Arshdeep Singh (up four spots to 19th), off-spinner Washington Sundar (up six places to 40th) and Mohammed Siraj (up 37 places to 47th) also made some ground. Adil Rashid continued to be the number one ranked T20I bowler in the world.
